June 14, 2005 - LEGO Knights' Kingdom Chess Set

Dragon magazine ran an article last year praising the D&D-like qualities of Lego's 2004 Knights' Kingdom sets. After getting my hands on some advance copies of the 2005 line, I'd like to say that while the 2004 line may have leaned towards D&D, in 2005 it's all BrikWars. "Vladek's Dark Fortress" is my favorite castle set in years.

I made a quick visit to classic-castle.com today and got a big surprise - Lego's broken into the wargame business! They're releasing a Lego chess set via Shop@Home. It's not available in the U.S. yet, but it looks like you can pre-order for June 30 shipping.

Why is this important? Three reasons:

One: As far as I know, this is Lego's first genuine stab at the gaming market. If we can get massive sales on this set, we'll encourage further development in that direction.

Two: It's awesome as an army-building set. Heavy sales will also encourage more minifig-intensive sets in the future, and everyone wants that.

Three: You'll never see a better source of Shadow Knights, and Shadow Knights rock (though I may have a paternal bias).

The chessboard baseplate is unfortunately glued together, but that just makes it perfect for BrickQuest dungeon modules.

Lego's wargame is old-school
Lego updates the classic color scheme of chess by replacing the white side with Barbie blue. But what kind of dark religion has Vladek as its bishop?
