There's no such thing as legitimate English- unlike most languages, there is no governing body that determines what slang becomes recognized as words and what archaic grammar is axed/kept etc. Its just kind of up to the private dictionaries and English Professor's personal preferences. English is kind of terrible as a language in this regard.

On the other hand, Spanish has 17 or so verb tenses which all must be conjugated differently for 6 different types of subjects and often enough fail to follow the rules for conjugation that were set in place for the language. You think that's bad? Russian is full of completely stupid little rules- for example, a quantity of years below 5 is referred to, for example, as 3 года, while above five it is, say 12 лет. There is no reason for this, and yet, there you go.
