State of the Army Address

Postby Ross_Varn » Mon Jan 25, 2010 7:33 pm

I suppose I should update you guys on my armies and battlefield. First off-

Image

All of my factions at once in my new war room.

Image

The ever-present FELC. Being my first faction, they haven't changed much. Their allies have though. Presenting...

Image

Epicus!

Coolest faction so far. I swear.

Image

And the Red Ninjas. I don't have any Classic Ninja torsos (Time to hit Briklink!), so I went with what I have. I figured I needed some ninjas anyway.

In quick succession counterclockwise from the top-

Image
BIN and the Fanboys, Hodgepodgians, Deadly Spacemen,

Image
Droids, United Peach Alliance,

Image
Time Warriors, Cuthulu Jr., and the Medi-Evils.

And of course,

Image

equipment.

Image

I also have here my collection of vehicles,

Image

and my new battletable.

C&C will be much appreciated. Forum battle to follow.

Well, while it seems too be off to a good start, the armys all seem very random. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it isn't necesarily a good thing either.

What I reccomend is that you seperate all your figs into their component parts(hats, heads, torso, arms, hands, hips, and legs) and the build matching armys from there. They can be different, or completely the same. Still, it will reduce eyehurt.

Also, for the battlefireld, I reccomend more clutter, but less random clutter. For example, that pile of rocks with a mast can be replaced with a toll booth with a lifting gate. All the little details matter.

Finally, when adding things like sniper baconies, machine gun nests and the like, be sure to add a way to take them out.

I hope the above advice helps.

Yea, I agree with Silent. I like my organization and I know that I have to spend a lot of time looking through my parts and finding a good combination that can be repeated. Looking at armies organized like RoC, Tuefish, or Natalya is very easy, and they are very powerful.

Not that this is bad, I just really like organization.

I agree with the above. You have some great materials, if you follow Silent Sigfig's advice you're bound to build some nice, original factions, even though it seems you don't have a great deal of the same anywhere except for clone and storm troopers. Still matches could be made.

Yes, I recommend:
a) Build flat, square area out of base plates - done
b) Then add a border, either with spawn points or facades/fences to block it off.
c) Add a few main features. Example: Two teams in a desert waste. The three key points are the Sultan's ruined palace, the Bone Yard of dead animals, and the Cave.
d) Add small features, such as cover and machinery
e) Add even smaller features that do not add too much to gameplay, like your chicken on the table
f) Balance it, when you add something in one place, give the other side[s] an equal advantage.

I'll post some of my terrain/cover.

Well, the "randomness" is kinda the point, Silent. When I get a lot more minis I'll prolly take that route, right now mainly only the FELC and the stormies have a basic design.

It's a start. We shall see.

I see that you have lots of similar clone torsos, and lots or tan arms.

That could make a cool combination.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Update: The Hodgepodgians and UPA have been disassembled and made anew, thanks to Sigfig.
Image
The Hodgepodgian army is componitized!

Image
Out of the components comes another Timewarrior Squad, Post-Apoc...

Image
...a Brikband called the Rokgods...

Image
...a United Peach Alliance Infantry Squad...

Image
...and the Improved Hodgepodgians, on the right.

That's all for now. I need to get new batteries for my camera and I will begin the forum battle. (My current lithium batteries are ANCIENT. I think Indiana Jones turned them up.)
