Brikwars General: Server Events

Postby Ross_Varn » Fri Feb 28, 2014 12:45 pm

Here, we can discuss plans for big builds, community projects and events everyone can participate in. Right now our concern is Spawn Town.

The main feature of the spawn area is a large, flat valley. People are starting to build houses around that area. What should we build in it, though? I'm rather fond of a particular concept: the Star Fort.

Whatever we decide to build (I'm in favor of naming it Bulwark, but you know me and my place-names) we've gotta figure out how to build it. I'd really like to have a spawn town forming the hub of the server itself, with roads and a town hall and walls and whatnot, but I'd like to hear others. Thoughts?

Otherwise, submit ideas for events, buildings, and whatnot.

Having attempted a star fort in the past, I can tell you that the angles involved are not fun to translate into the Minecraft medium.

That said, it's still doable, it's just difficult to put any amount of interesting detail into it. You'd basically have a big star shaped cobble wall, and wouldn't be able to make it look much better than that.

I guess that's just my Creative brain going, though. For a Survival server, I think it might look neat. Just a bit bland from a ground perspective.

My vote is for a fortified city, made using a mixture of stone bricks and cobble. We'd have a huge wall go around the valley, and on top on one of the hills, a circular keep overlooking it all. When I get back on, I'll go GM1 for a minute and take a proper aerial shot, and do a quick plan overlay onto it.

Right now I'm working on an underground base/city near the mountain, so if you need cobble for any above ground stuff, I can supply it in quantity. I think building a fortified city on the scale Dilanski is proposing might be a bit much for a server our size, but something a little smaller, like a wall around the mountain, would be doable.

OK, here is my proposal, presented in Paint-O-Vision (TM(Not reallyTM))

Image

To explain, this is a simplification of the star fort idea. The structure would be a round base, about 8 blocks high, with roof space for a huge set of farms, and a leaf covered courtyard where all the markets could be based. There would be 4 main gate entrances, each with a piston door, to keep most mobs out. It may eat a lot of room, but in the courtyard, a good sized pond, with water streams around it should be easily accessible, for endermen defence. Extra room inside could be given to a bar/pub/tavern/lounge, and spare rooms for those who need a quick bed.

Thoughts? I can start marking down numbers and putting them into generators when we know. Back of the envelope calculations suggest 25 stacks of cobble for a 2 thick, 5 high outer wall, just to give an idea of the undertaking this may be, although it could swell into the 30's. Peaceful could stay on until this is complete.

I have to admit that trying to build a place deep underground has been fun because of the survival challenge involved. I've been ambushed be enemies multiple times down there.

The server seems to be on peaceful right now. Let's keep the monsters coming until we actually start building the fort at least, we can decide the difficulty then.

Harry: Are you fucking serious?
Remus: Well yes, but I don't see how that applies here.

Whelp. Time to see if my terraforming and igniting of the surrounding area has been enough to keep me monster free.

I hate to butt in, but uh...

I finally got the map to load into MCEdit. Here's the schematic for the crater, should you choose to use it. 672 x 672 x 144 are the dimensions of the selection, so it may take a while to load but it should do it if you give it a few minutes.

Ok, so I take it the star fort is the primary plan? So does anyone have a proposal for how to do the shape?
