My top score is:

Neutral human female valkyrie died in the Gnomish Mines on Level 9. Killed by a giant spider while helpless. Max HP 60. 4796 points.

Also if you're a valk, i'd recommend trying out lawful dwarven valkyrie. If you are lawful, it's quite easy to get your first artifact weapon, Excalibur (by dipping your starting long sword into fountains -but it's dangerous at low levels so hold off on that for now -can release water demons, make your sword rusty, water mocassins, etc). There's a 1/6 chance of getting excalibur, when that happens your long sword turns into ... well this:

Also as a dwarf, the gnomish mines will be considerably easier since the gnomes and dwarves will be peaceful. Make sure you train your pet up nice and strong, and he'll kill off the g and h for you so you don't have to kill the peaceful buggers to get their armor. Usually by the time I've completed the mines and/or sokoban, I feel beefy enough to start dipping into fountains. Depends on my hp, my AC, any emergency getter-outters i might have acquired, extra backup weapon for if my sword gets thoroughly rusty, etc.

Anyways, try it out, i think this alone would boost your survival significantly.

Downloaded this today....I, errr...died at level three...got stuck in a bear trap, at a rotten newt corpse, got free, died.

Stuff I've discovered that beginners might find useful:
-Drop things at altars to see if they are cursed or blessed.
-Throw a tripe or food ration at wild cats and dogs to make them your pets.
-Don't kick doors.
