Favorite metal bands by genre?

Postby samuelzz10 » Thu Mar 20, 2014 9:15 pm

Title is self explanatory, post no more than 5 bands per subgenre.

Glam:
-Quiet Riot
-Motley Crue
-Dokken
-Def Leppard
-Old Pantera (in my opinion, better than a lot of later Pantera)

Hard Rock/Classic Rock that has made at least an album's worth of metal:
-Queen (mostly older work, like Stone Cold Crazy)
-KISS (Creatures of the Night is an album's work, but there's even more than that through their whole career)
-Boston
-Kansas
-AC/DC (I would consider them something like Blues Metal, but I digress)

Death/Progressive Death:
-Amon Amarth
-Death
-Kreator

Progressive Rock/Metal: (I say rock too because progressive varies wildly inside of a band's own discography)
-Frank Zappa
-Deep Purple
-Rush

Speed/Thrash:
-Metallica
-Overkill
-Toxik
-Anthrax
-Megadeth

Shred/Neoclassical:
-Van Halen
-Anything with Paul Gilbert
-Same with Yngwie Malmsteem
-And Randy Rhoads
-And Ritchie Blackmore (Not including folk music he does these days)

Power Metal:
-Gamma Ray
-Manowar
-Riot
-Stryper (even though I've only heard THE COVERING, which is actually really good)
-Dio

NWOBHM:
-Diamond Head
-Raven
-Motorhead
-Iron Maiden
-Jaguar

Traditional:
-Black Sabbath
-Judas Priest
-Led Zeppelin
-Thin Lizzy
-Aerosmith (mostly Rocks)

Hardcore Punk: (Not metal, but more or less influenced Thrash entirely, which in turn created Black and Death)
-Black Flag
-NOFX
-Municipal Waste
-MC5

So what are your favorites?

Progressive Metal: Nevermore

Thrash: Annihilator

Speed: Rage

Right, but sub genres are often helpful if you want to describe the sound of a band. Although it is not unlikely to have a hard time finding the right label... When in doubt it's always Metal!

The usual suspects have already been named. While i like many of these bands there is so much more interesting Metal out there! Here are some contemporary favourites of mine so listen up kids :rtfm: :

Heavy Metal, Black Metal and Doom are my favourite genres so they come first. I will try to link albums so you can check out the bands.

Heavy Metal

Atlantean Kodex - "The bad Goddess"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sq9oQivijg
Those guys have been my absolute favourites during the past few years. They're everything Manowar want to be but cannot. True, epic and heavy as fuck! I have plugged them here before.

Skull Fist - "Head öf the Pack"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EreMqXaxf5o
Canadian speed metal dudes. They're the shit. Also, the singer broke his neck a few months ago while skateboarding. A youtube video is available.

Audrey Horne - "Youngblood"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEVVKhdmL0o
Ok, so these Norwegians sport some heavy classic rock influences on their latest album but they are so good at what they do! This is the best live band in the rock/metal business these days. Don't believe me? Go and see them, you won't regret it! In fact they are so good one wonders why they aren't huge and headlining the largest festivals yet.

High Spirits - "Another Night"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4S0HyUJ ... 07D3778C41
High Energy Rock is what they call their music and yes, they're right! I love the positive vibes their music has.

Black Metal

MGLA - "With hearts towards none"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aFGuKwF2ic
Is MGLA the best black metal band of Poland? Europe? The World? I'll let you decide. Forget about the Scandinavians the best black metal these days comes from others places.
MGLA means "fog" and they're more of the atmospheric type of black metal bands. If you're more into rough and ugly black metal check out their sorts of side project "Cultes des Ghoules" whose album "Henbane" sounds like a modern De Mysteriis...

Deafheaven - "Sunbather"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfbLWHT7vUU
Fucking Hipsters! After the last concert it told them "Hey, your music is great but you look really shitty." Answer: "Yeah, we get this a lot." Enough said.

Anaal Nathrakh - "Vanitas"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQtcFqKv ... Yt&index=8
Sonically among the most extreme and vitriolic bands around they make a perfect blend of Emperor and Napalm Death. If you feel like killing every living thing on earth put them on like Bonn-o-Tron. Or to put it another way: "If you want a picture of the future imagine a bootprint on a human skull. Forever."

Winterfylleth - "The Threnody of Triumph"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocQNZJw5OUo
The best black metal band to come out of England for many years. Atmospheric and melodic with interesting lyrics about the past of their nation. For good measure they've also somewhat of a Piltogg/rightwing controversy going on like Bonn-o-Tron. But i talked to them in person, they're cool. Everyone is allowed to have a bad taste in music.

Caladan Brood - "Echoes of Battle"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=py6iHvKbDjs
The least black metal sounding of the bunch the vibes are definitely still there. I am absolutely in love with this album. Those melodies, the choirs, these riffs, the lyrics, the artwork, the epicness! They blow Summoning out of their pants.

Tryptikon - "Epirastea Daimones"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSnXCa7 ... 6A6574A22B
Celtic Frost are disbanded but with his new band Tom G. Warrior remains to be the Boss of Evil. I am genuinely afraid to listen to this album more often because it will pull you down to the deepest, blackest part of your soul where you will find - nothing. The video to "Shatter" visualizes that quite well.

Doom

Procession - "To reap heavens apart"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MNgQsYNeAw
If anyone raves about Black Sabbath's "13" fuck them! THIS is the doom album of the past year. Doom how it's supposed to sound like with a distinctive vocalist and riffs you will never forget. Enough with the hippies.

While Heaven Wept - "Vast Oceans Lachrymose"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYfUVQUE2X0
WHW have been around for ages. It's amazing how they make songs that are so emotional and epic yet ONE step in front of the border where it becomes pathetic. Lately they have incorporated some power and progressive elements. Vast Oceans still has a more classic sound. "Vessel" especially is a monolith of melody. The next album will be interesting too because it will consist of only one long song.

Primordial - "Redemption at the Puritan's hand"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWbNWsptiRY
I will never forget the moment discovering this band. Travelling by train early in the morning, tired after spending the night waking, with fog rising from the fields going by. The music really gripped me at that moment and never since lost its hold. Very passionate metal with perhaps the most charismatic lead singer in Metal today, quote: "Some music still comes from the heart". Go see them live if you can.

Best of the rest:

Death Metal:
- Necros Christos
- Deserted Fear

Thrash Metal:
- Midnight
- Space Chaser
- Nocturnal Breed

Glam:
- Steel Panthers
- Skid Row (will never grow old on me)

Power Metal:
- Powerwolf (just for the laughs)

When you are about to get laid Metal:
- Solstafir (last two albums!)
- Watain (also works great no matter if she likes black metal or not)

Too extreme to really like it but good for your credibility Metal:
- Portal (.au)

I know Kreator is thrash, but at the same time they're on the heavier end of the thrash spectrum and they also happen to sing about death pretty much all the time, which in my eyes makes them a thrash death metal hybrid.

That's pretty much what I was going to say, although I still want to throw this in:
I really don't want to sound like some asshole who thinks listening to metal makes him sophisticated or cultured, but acting like being drunk and high off your ass while listening to metal is the only way to listen to metal is really fucking stupid. I like to listen to metal because the musicians really care about their craft, not because everything needs to involve being hedonistic.

(insert a TON of bands here)

Glam:
- Skid Row (will never grow old on me)

Thanks for all those bands I've never heard of! And also, it seems like a lot of people really like Skid Row, which is something I still need to get around to listening to.

Hehe. I was just trolling yo.

I decided to give it a shot myself. I tried to pick only my top favorite and only included subgenres that I actually listen to. Included is a sample song like Apollyon did.

Death Metal - Fleshgod Apocalypse - Minotaur

Thrash Metal - Lazarus AD - Thou Shall Not Fear

Power Metal - Symphony X - The Walls of Babylon

Traditional Metal - Black Sabbath - Not Needed

Doom Metal - Mastodon - Colony of Birchmen

Post Metal - Isis - From Sinking

Progressive Metal - The Ocean - Mesopelagic: Into The Uncanny

Mastodon, Doom Metal...? Doom is more like early Paradise Lost, Anathema, My Dying Bride...

Doom in a more Stony way, but I can definitely understand the relation. Crack The Skye has lots of Doom elements.
