The Ruinatic War

Somewhere in the desolate ruins of an ancient settlement, two armies are summoned both without will or any idea of what was going on. Only M'Lady and I know their fates. To an extent at least, who can fathom the will of dice-rolls?

Turn Zero

Image

A force of Frostbornian Tribesmen, led by an ice mage and a mysterious hooded stranger.

Image

And the Imperial Legions aided by a number of dragon cavalry and cavalry alike, with a dark knight at the helm.

Image

The ice mage was the first to put his surprise to words. "Whoa," he said, sounding exasperated, "where are we? Is this real?"

"Good question," observed the hooded stranger, as they both turned toward the forces behind them.

Image

Image

"Well, there's an army ahead of us, and one here with us. Guess there's only one thing to do," continued the stranger, peering at the anxious warriors before them. "Lets kick some ass."

"Hey wait, didn't you see that weird pile of hairy flesh behind--"

"That's not important. Now lets go."

Image

With incredible convenience, a Frostbornian kannon appears just outside of their ranks, manned by a group of gun powder specialists and guards.

And thus begins the Ruinatic War, as soon as I format the rest of the images.

Turn One

Image

Image

The Imperial Legions and hired cavalry all move up, their hero on the dark dragon sailing ahead of them toward the Frostbornains.

Image

Image

"Onward, to adventure!" Shouted the hooded stranger, dashing off to the left of the Frostbornian ranks with the mage lagging behind. The rest of the warriors move up, some of them following their Hero's lead.

Image

Image

The specialists prepare the kannon, under the watchful eye of their officer. This kannoneer uses his action for the turn to load it up. They then swivel the kannon in the general direction of the Imperials and wait.

Also, DOUBLE POST.

Turn Two

Image

All of the Imperials move up, closing in on the Frostbornian ranks. A pair of dragon calvarymen fly up to the ruins to get a better view of their enemy's positioning.

Image

I think I messed up somewhere taking pictures, but at one point the hooded stranger and mage move up toward the main ruins, the mage stopping and preparing a spell while the hero moves up behind cover.

Image

The dark knight moves up toward the mage, dimly aware of the hooded hero lying in wait. However, seeing the mage as the bigger threat for now, she hovers ahead and wills her dragon a response action in case the going got rough.

Image

Meanwhile, the rest of the dragon cavalry loom toward the kannon emplacement. After a What-I-Say-Goes roll (Which we did a lot during this battle) which determined the dragon's firebreath range, the mounts found that they could attack from further away than they -especially the kannon crew- anticipated.

Image

The results were pretty deadly.

Image

So deadly, that the second blast by the second dragon knocked over a guard and toasted the rifleman.

Image

Speaking of deadly, this is what happened during one of our rolls of the turn.

Image

So we decided to go along with it. Poor chap.

Image

The mage focuses his powerful magical energy and tips his staff toward the dark knight and her stead. "I think it's time your dragon chills," he said with a wicked grin.

Image

Then the spell critfails and backfires, freezing the ice mage solid. Probably a result of his horrible pun.

Image

The dark knight is not amused.

Image

Performing a heroic feat, the hooded stranger leaps from his position toward the dark knight.

Image

His foot successfully collides with the dark knight's visor with enough force to knock her off her stead.

Image

And sending her crashing toward the ground, disrupted until her next turn.

Image

The stranger lands in front of his warriors, looking all epic and inspiring and stuff.

Meanwhile at the kannon, the officer shouts profanities at the cavalrymen who had just charred half his crew, and in a fit of rage he heaves the cannon toward them and aims. He tries to fire it, but the cannon doesn't seem to be functioning right all of a sudden, causing the officer's obscene language toward the cavalry to strengthen.

Ignoring everything else, a guard drops his sword and picks this thing up for some reason.

TRIPLE POST.

Turn Three

Image

Imperial axemen and crossbowmen alike move up toward the middle of the battlefield, preparing to take on the bulk of the Frostbornians.

Image

While a couple of crossbowmen break formation and trudge toward a small cluster of ruins.

Image

The pair of dragon riders move on up, leering at the kannon below them and very much within range.

Image

Then they blast it to hell, killing the disrupted guard, knocking over the officer and somehow leaving the guard right below them completely unscathed.

Image

Another view of the destruction.

Image

Unamused by their mage's self-ice sculpturing, the heavy infantry press on instead of freeing him with their warhammers. He'll probably thaw out soon anyway. They move up and allow the mage to uselessly fall to the ground. The archers move up as well and fire at the riderless dragon.

Image

They are met with critical success, as their arrows bite through the dragon's hide and blast him to pieces, killing it quite instantly.

Image

An Overwatch. For whatever reason, the hooded stranger is still striking his epic landing pose, the infantry clustered in front of him staring in awe.

Image

The other squad of archers move up and fire at the dragons, hoping to get compensation for the wreckage that was once a kannon.

Image

They score a few hits, but it's not enough to kill them.

DOMINATING.

This is pretty hype; wish lighting was a bit better though.

Man I've always wanted one of those black dragons. This is rad.

Really? They are quite common over here (probably because 6007 - Batl Lord, but 4818 - Dragon Rider was also a cheap way to get it) - I have a harder time finding green ones!

This is where I come in and be a dick. I have a gold-decorated red-winged dragon from a Johnny Thunder set:

The battle report is looking nice, nice to see people letting stuff like this pass, :zig: :

Great game, it's obvious that the die only killed the guard because it rolled a five

Turn Four

Image

Now that the kannon was dealt with, the pair of dragon cavalrymen ignore the two survivors at it's burning remnants and fly toward the archers that tried attacking them last turn.

Image

And proceed to burninate two of them.

Image

Man, Frostborne and fire really don't mix.

Image

The rest of the imperials move up get ready for close combat.

Image

The gunpowder officer gets up and surveys the remnants of his kannon. He looks pretty sad.

Image

Meanwhile, the other surviving member of the kannon crew drops whatever he was holding, and throws the spear mounted on his back. He's met with a surprisingly good roll and ends up throwing it damn-near the full length of the battlefield.

Image

And kills this guy.

Image

This is an Overwatch of the battle. Unfortunately, it was getting pretty late and we decided to end it here.

Image

Image

Image

So yeah, that's pretty much it. We may pick this up again sometime and continue from there, but that's unlikely. Either way, this was really fun and we will definitely be doing more of these in the future.

I have two green ones, one from the witches' flyer in Fright Knights (my first set ever!), the other... I honestly don't know. They're among my oldest figs. I think I got the Dragon Rider set at one point but I may have traded a black one for a green one back then with one of my friends.

I should probably tell you that back then Green dragons were considered much cooler and stronger than black ones because black dragons were so readily available while greens were very rare (to us). As kids with no idea Bricklink existed even 1 euro armour or basically anything from older lines was something to be in awe of. I also remember we used to treat the Bulls like crap and believe they were 'the worst soldiers' because they were so numerous and cheap at the time, or how views can change  (this may or may not have influenced their backstory)

Ken that battle was sweet. Maybe a post wizard could move your posts together now so our banter doesn't break up the order ;)

Thanks guys. I've actually never owned any of those dragons, but I do very well remember the Golden Dragon from the Johnny Thunder series. All of the dragon cavalry belonged to M'lady. As far as the green ones being much stronger, I'm not gonna lie here: Don't matter the color, they all kicked my arse. All in good fun, though.

Zahru II wrote:Wish lighting was a bit better though.
Yes, we were both saying that throughout most of the battle. There was only one light in the whole room and it was mounted on the wall pretty much to the north of where I was sitting.

Pretty cool battle. Too bad you didn't get to use the scenery a little more though.
