Bar/Party advice

Postby Silverdream » Tue Jan 28, 2014 6:47 pm

Today I was invited to a fundraiser by one of my peers and I said I would go. It happens in a few weeks and takes place in an Irish pub. The problem is that I've never been inside a bar for longer than 30 seconds, and I haven't hung out with anyone for about three weeks so I'm a little rusty. Also, while I haven't had a panic attack in about a year, I nearly had one last week when I went to my lab.

How do I ready myself for this fundraiser if I choose to go?

Canada lets you go to bars at like 18, right?

I hate to put it as simple as have fun, but have fun. Even if you nearly had a panic attack a week ago, the fact remains that you haven't had one in a long time, which is something worth celebrating. Drink, or don't. The cool part about bars is that you can just watch everyone else get sloshed if you're uncomfortable with that kind of thing, so don't feel obligated to drink if you don't want to.

Only in Quebec. It's 19 everywhere else.

I have no advice to give, just thought I'd add some :rtfm: .

While I would say you should try to BE FUN as well, not everyone can do that. So just be confident--it will make everything easier.

I actually drink every once in a while, I am a total lightweight though. The drinking age here is 19, and I'm 19 so it's all good. My problem is basically not running away while being alone at a party.

I've watched Gurren Lagann four times, but I can easily become awkward. I don't know if booze really affects my confidence, as the last time I got drunk with people I began telling my family about how amazing the Mongols were and how they used the decimal system.

Its my experience that no matter who you're talking with, it can be someone who shares your exact tastes, or complete opposite, you can find SOMETHING to talk about. If you see someone alone as well, strike up a convo with him/her. Also, you say your rusty, that happens. So, since you have a few weeks, try to get out as much as you can. You seem to be an introvert (meaning that you gain energy by being alone, not meant as an insult), but just get out again when you feel rested after your last escapade. Such as this weekend, I went out everyday, even though all I wanted to do was stay home, watch some animu, and build lego. I did that today, but, Fri-Mon I was out.

TL;DR: Talk with random person, get out a lot before fundraiser.

Pretend it's Model UN, and that if you talk to people nicely enough and win them over, you get a shiny hammer.

Well Silva it all depends on your looks, you're going to have to strip down naked and show us pictures. After you do that I can say you have the confidence to do anything, and since my word is law, then you'll be going to the damn party.
