Minifig's arm length or shorter: Pistol
Longer than arm length: Small Rifle
Minifig's height and longer: Rifle or Heavy Weapon

Classifying made easy.

I had the SW weapons in mind when thought of this.

good easy scale to use really. i just say what they are at the begining of the battle
