Vol Custom Railgun rules

Rail-guns work by propelling their projectile along a magnetic track, or “Mag-rail”.
They are limited in both range and power by the length of the mag-rail.
For every 2 studs of mag-rail length, add 1d6 of damage, and 6” of range.
Rail-guns are rated by the size of their mag-rail, a two stud long mag-rail is classified as a category 1,
or cult. 1, a four stud long mag-rail is a cult. 2, and so on et cetera.

See? very simple, yet realistic as far as how railguns really work.
All feedback welcome.

So by these rules - the Golden Bough has a 240 inch range, and 40x1d6 damage?

Jesus H christ man . . . that's just . . .

well, when you have to contend with the 2 biggest goddamn minifig-scale fleets on the forums, sometimes you just need a gun that shoots though planets.
If that gun happens to have engines mounted on it...

so your saying this weapon that can be held by one minifig can do 4d6 damage! that... is... awesome! (but what is the cost mechanism.)

why not just use standard weapons rules? As far as I can see, there is no reason to not just make every weapon a railgun.

For really big guns this just seems like a weaker version of the 2001 mass driver rules. The Golden Bough would easily be a MkIV or MkV mass driver, which can deal up to 32d10 (over an 8" radius) or 60d10 (over a 10" radius), respectively. Granted, it's at a shorter range (50"/60"), but a range of TWENTY FEET seems excessively broken (particularly when mounted on a highly mobile flier).

Also you didn't say anything about UR. And having the damage depend only on the size of the gun and not on the size of the payload is pretty unrealistic.

Sorry that I was only critical in this post. It's just...I like complaining.

I would guess that for each 2 studs= 1 inch so the use would be 42 and the cp would 120, so the only thing you could shoot would be a planet.

A lot of good points brought up here, first, just to be clear, these are meant to be simplified rules, as complex rules make me confused and angry. Second, I honestly haven't thought about UR or CP, so let's say; start at 3 UR and 5 CP for a cult. 1, then add 1UR and 5 CP for each category after that.

exactly. railguns are awesome. 8)

currently it sits at around 102 inches total. :twss:

Not when you consider that A: realistically, space battles would be fought at the hundred or thousand-mile range.
and B: A real Railgun's range is only limited by the curvature of the earth, no curve = much, much bigger range.

Well then, I look forward to seeing your next battle report. I assume you'll be getting the folks at Google Earth to help photograph it?
