The Heroic Duel

Postby Greenkey15 » Sun Jul 18, 2010 6:43 pm

It's basically what it says. A hero should not die a stupid death, should he? Every hero should die in an epic Final Battle, not being gunned down by a tank.

If your hero's armor is successfully beaten, the hero is not counted as dead, but downed. Due to the strange bending of physiks when heroes are around, any unit with a mind can use one action to revive a hero. These heroes are back in the fight until gunned down again.

When a hero decides he wants to kill another, a duel is initiated.
-The assaulting hero declares how he wants to attack, similar to a heroic feat.
-The defender declares how he would defend from such an attack.
-Both parties roll 1d6.
-The higher roller wins. Now the defender, if alive, gets to counterattack.
-This goes on until one party has taken 3 hits.
-When one hero has taken 3 hits, he is dead. There is no way to bring him back. Put his head on a pike, and leave him to rot.

That's really all there is to it.

YES.

This is a great idea! I'm going to have to try this. Thanks Greenkey.

Isn't that the point of redshirts? As long as you have enough meat shields around you don't have to worry about dying a stupid death.

I think there's all ready a lot of stuff to save a hero: above average stats, red shirt ability, heroic feat ability, and any other special cliches you want to add. Plus I don't believe in a free lunch so there should be a cost or penalty to reviving a "downed" hero. I think like you said, any minifig can approach the downed hero and use an action to revive him but he must roll for it (makes sense, you at least roll for heroic feats too.):

Roll of 1=Critical Failure, the Hero is slain.
Roll of 2,3,4=Unsuccessful. Hero is still downed, nothing happens.
Roll of 5 or 6=Success! Hero revived.

Or you could go with this option. I personally like this one better because even if a tank mindlessly blew your hero to pieces, if he had attempted a heroic feat that turn he's still dying a heroes death and should be left put to rest. Otherwise...

Treat it as a last chance heroic feat. If the hero has not used a heroic feat this turn he or she can use one to revive himself. Roll against your opponent as you would normally for a heroic feat. Even if your opponent does not roll, you must. A roll of one means the feat is a critical failure and you die.

I think you could get more or less the same effect by giving Heroes multiple wounds. This protects them from instant death, and they can use Stupendous Feats to regenerate wounds and stay in the fight. I like your idea of special "dueling" rules for epic fights between heroes. How about this: If both players agree to duel, all other game action stops (only the two Heroes can move or attack) until either the duel is resolved or both players agree to return to the game. Also, heroes automatically get a "dying" stupendous feat, allowing them to perform one final attack before their death if they receive a fatal wound.

Just one random act of violence can brighten your day. Especially if it involves explosives.

I pretty much did what Blackdog is suggesting, multiple wounds but lots of Medi-packs all over the place. it just made sense and it seemed to go down a treat with the players.

As to duelling, I have had some ideas similar to that but it's all hush, hush for now.

For my next forum battle I'm going to test out roving medical droids that will move towards the nearest dead minifig each turn and heal them.

Yeah, dueling would be really cool in a regular game but in a forum battle it would be tough to manage. You would have to pretty much make sure that both participants are sitting at their computers, and have the duel end if one player took more than, say, 15 minutes to respond.

Also: any non-heroic minifigs or units interfered with during a duel can take a Response roll to bail/run out of the way, so it's a bit harder (but still not impossible) for players to use the Heroic Duel to simply destroy the other person's army while it can't fight back. Obviously, no one can RedShirt for the heroes during a heroic duel -- it's a matter of honor, and no mere cannon fodder is allowed to interfere.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear, but that's exactly what I meant.

This is also really fun in an RP-style setting.
