Went in expected a cliched but fun movie, got what I came for. Pacific Rim is full of "Fuck Yeah" moments and actually is quite original(I don't think I've ever seen a three armed mecha before), and I definitely wasn't expecting the Kaiju to do the stuff they did. There's also a dog in this movie, and it's really cute. I reccomend seeing this film.

Knives Chau also makes an appearance, and she is probably the most interesting character in the film.

Also, the theme song is awesome. It's done by the same guy who does the music for Game of Thrones.

Spoiler: show
The only problem I really had with Pacific Rim is that they didn't show enough of Cherno Alpha or Crimson Typhoon, which were the coolest Jaegers in my opinion.

Also, I thought taking the sword out at the last moment was a plothole, but then I thought about it and realized that Gipsy Danger's main tactic is to get and close and blast Kaijus with plasma. They also might not have expected to be pulled so close to the atmosphere.

Ron Perlman was awesome as he usually is.

The sets were really awesome, there were also a couple of cool stills that I want to make into backgrounds when the movie comes out on DVD.

Best line:
Where would you rather die? Here, or in a jaeger?!? (With added cliche emphasis on the last few words for extra hilarity.)

Shut up, I found it funny.

ALSO: I also find it funny that this, what is a rather American film features giant mecha called "jaeger(s)", which is German for "hunter(s)" and was used by H1tler's wehrmacht to designate their tank destroyer vehicles ("hunting tanks") in WWII. Nice irony Warnerbros. :tiger:

A real jaeger: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jagdpanther

That's not ironic at all, Alanis Morrisette.

Jaeger means hunter, and the mechas were basically hunting big animals. There were also light infantry units in WWII called Jaegers, and before that Jaegers were just hunters.

It is an American movie with a Mexican director that features characters from Australia, Russia, Germany and China fighting Japanese named monsters in giant robots and takes place in mainly Hong Kong.

Also I'm still not sure if Knives was Chinese or Japanese.

Also the stupidest part:
Spoiler: show
The coastal wall. How the fuck did they think that would work? Even placing giant plasma turrets on the coast would be a better idea.

You need to understand, in England, things with lots of guns, large robots and loud people are automatically associated with America (It's difficult to explain unless you've had the association since forever), and I thought it was slightly ironic that Hollywood's war machines are given the same names as H1tler's tanks. Anyways, serves me right for commenting on a film I've never really seen. Although really, I thought I'd be able to hold it up for a little bit longer...

How the fuck are giant robots associated with America? Japan and Germany are the only two countries to build giant robots that function (well, the bagger 288 isn't a robot, but it's obviously meant to withstand giant robot attacks).

"Jäger" is still a rank in the german military. (The lowest in certain parts of the Heer=army).

I totally agree with you on Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon. I would have liked to see more of the other Jaegers in general. I guess Del Torro wanted to put them in too, but the movie would have been way too long so they decided to focus on the few that they did. Fuckin' Russians and their piston-powered punchy robots.

Mako Mori is a good character. She's also confirmed Japanese, from Tokyo.
Spoiler: show
The swords weren't installed when Raleigh was piloting Gipsy Danger. They got installed later after Mako upgraded the Jaeger at the Hong Kong Shatterdome so that it would kick more ass. Still, It would have been pretty nice if they'd told Raleigh about them before he climbed in the damn thing, they certainly wouldn't have caused as much collateral damage from using that ship as a makeshift baton.

There's a mid-credits scene where Ron Perlman cuts his way out of the baby Kaiju and bitches about his shoe. Gotta keep that pimp hand strong.

Kaiju Blood is also revealed to be toxic, which is why most of the weapons are designed to cauterize or bludgeon them to death.

Yeah so I've been thinking about this. If conventional weapons just aren't strong enough because of the size of the Kaiju, and they can't use nukes because of fallout and stuff, why don't they just use bunker-busting bombs? I mean, seriously. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthquake_bomb Something like that. Except more modern.
