Avatar is western animation, no matter what it tries to portray itself as.

Yeah too many to name, like a favorite music list.
So here is just one.

Samurai Champloo

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samurai_Champloo
It featured a production team led by director Shinichirō Watanabe, character designer Kazuto Nakazawa and mechanical designer Mahiro Maeda.
Samurai Champloo was Watanabe's first directorial effort for an anime television series after the critically acclaimed Cowboy Bebop.
Lots of sword fights.

Yeah, that was a pretty good one. Ending stopped making sense though.

They both got killed and both of them got saved by someone who we saw killed. I really liked the finale, and I thought that both fights were awesome but that part bothers me.
In any case, the anime had some awesome music.

It's animade by Koreans, which is close enough.

The only anime I've seen in full is Soul Eater, which I recommend. I'll eventually watch Death Note...but otherwise I have no drive to watch anime as I already have a 20+ list of stuff I want to watch on netflix.

Colette wrote:So far only Evangelion (ever since Silva linked to that one video in the minifig-scale Eva thread), although I must say that I like what I see and am interested in exploring other animes.

Unfortunately, I'm only on episode 11 so far as I have to steal the FBI's headphones, tell her I'm watching "multivariable calculus lectures", and find a time when she won't interrupt me for a while (i.e. shower, closet-cleaning, etc.) every time I want to watch an episode, so I've been moving at a snail's pace.
After you're done Evangelion I don't really know what to reccomend you.

You could watch Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann which is by the same studio and has awesome mecha fights.

If your favourite thing about it was the scary and depressing parts I would reccomend The Road.

If you want to watch something short but good you should watch Madoka Magica (but don't look up anything about it).

If you liked the mecha fights, explosions, fictional science and drama then I would reccomend Code Geass. Although you have to watch the episodes in order. Also the english Dub is actually watchable.

Anyways, good for you for rebelling against your parent(s).

To be honest my favorite part of the show is those bizarre-as-fuck angels. Each one is like a Kinder surprise egg of weirdness.

I mean, people might say that, say, Rei is a little cute, but she has nothing on a perfectly-geometric octahedron or a living pocket dimension explained by higher-order physics theories. Super-intelligent biological computer virus is close, although it has the off-chance of turning out to be an STD or something.

The ending to the series is a Gainax Ending that involves penguins.
