If anything, my country needs a governmental shutdown, before the arsehole Etonite's shit on everything. But how the US committing the equivalent of inhaling lead paint fumes would cause every country in the world to close up is a bit beyond me, take cover from the inevitable shit super hurricane/tsunami yes, but not stop altogether.

So what would have happened is credit markets and liquidity would have all dried up suddenly. No more loans, mortgages, credit cards, etc. Whoever the US owed money to would be screwed out of it. Basically all sorts of money would suddenly not be there and there would be no way to fill the void without other countries ruining their currency (inflation) by printing money.

I've been trying to follow this topic from the news and various other media. Let me see if I can cut through some of the crap: Obama is pushing for a state wide funded medical reform and will force medical insurance to take on all clients regardless of costs. Sort of like the Socialist Medical Provision we have in Britain but Obama has to work in a round about way cause many Americans are greedy money whore fuckers that wont look after their own. Since the cost has to come from somewhere it's the people who CAN pay that WILL pay more. How much more is unsure. These people naturally don't want to pay for poor or sick people unable to pay their own medical expenses. (BTW if you want poor people to become productive you have to develop them to do so). Congress, which is heavily entangled with compromising business dealings with medical corporations think they can hang the government up and force it to agree to a lesser reform with refusing to agree to a monetary budget. Which is ridiculous posturing as this system works on debt. Without debt there can be no money. Treasury Bonds, Federal Reserve notes, it's all just flim flam and smoke and mirrors. The Government pulled the rug from under congress by shutting things down and letting the media furor do most of the work for them, which mostly made Congress look worse than the government. I suspect it was a lesser of two evils as no one was getting away with a clean record. Obama gave nothing to Congress and no concessions were made. However, this agreed budget is only a delaying tactic as it last only until February which will force both parties back to the table to hash it all out again.

You understand this better than 80% of Americans.

Although you are making a distinction between government and congress, its really the same thing.
Congress made the gov shutdown because they couldn't pass a bill that would keep it open.

You can think of the country's government as a car that has one steering wheel and no free will.
But it has 3 drivers, President, Senate (half of congress), House(half of congress).
So just trying to get to Starbucks will probably end up in a ditch.

This...is perhaps one of the best comparisons I've ever read.

If our two parties could come to some compromises, then we might finally be able to get shit done.

I doubt if getting shit done is their goal. They're there to give us all a show and divert our attention from the important stuff going on like Bonn-o-Tron. Screwing the people is just a side benefit that works to their advantage and pays those involved to keep doing it. Such is capitalism.

I have a vague understanding of the world. I have to if I am to stand any chance of leading the uprising that will rip it all down... in order to place my own improved creation in it's place.

I, for one, welcome our new undead fire-headed overlord.

Seriously though, the whole situation is getting out of hand. This is the... fifth (?) time they've done something similar in the last six years, and most of the country is getting quite sick of it. There was a suggestion going around that if they didn't get off of their arses and do their job, that we should impeach the lot of them and make them repay their salaries back to the government. It is a nice pipe dream, that.

A larger part of the issue is that with (predominantly) a two-party system, it becomes easier for the two to get into this kind of jam, where both parties want to get their own way and won't compromise (kind of like spoiled two-year olds). To make matters worse, it appears (to me, anyway) that one of the parties (GOP or politician, depending on what you want to call them) seems to be falling apart and splitting into little sub-factions, none of which really seem to get along with each other, let alone with the politicians. Whole thing is a giant mess.

Edit: Well, that is interesting. Didn't know that the forum automagially turns mention of any specific political party name into the word "politician." I notice that using GOP doesn't trigger that change though...

When presented by a Gordian Knot, do not attempt to solve it. Like Alexander The Great hack through with a sword.

Line all of Congress along the Washington Key Bridge and have them stood, tied and weighted facing out over the Potomac river. Walk down the line and push every third official off the bridge. It's a bit Roman so the Returdlicans should enjoy it. Those that are left will have a better understanding of what failing the people can bring. You could argue that people with the required skills and abilities to work in Congress would be lost but how hard is it to accept a bribe? Just pick people off the street.

Those people are generally not in Congress.
