probably because "THIS IS SPARTAAAA AND ACADIAAAAAA" was too long

300 dedicated warriors trained from childhood to kill and fed on a stark brutal tradition of what it is to be a warrior. Mercilessly drilled to be a whole unit that would react in an instant.
1500 civilian levy probably given a few months training and of fair to passing health to begin with. Probably hadn't used a spear let alone a sword and shield before either.
Read a book on it.
