The only band I know the uses cellos is Apocalyptica, and they used to be a Metallica cover band (you said it was a cover). Is it them?

No, though you're going in the right direction considering genre. They were popular around that time but have moved out of the picture because of their non-commercial approach to music (they see it as a form of art rather than a means to make money and believe money and fame pretty much fucks everything up, which is close to the truth), though they still retain a strong fan base in many countries. They only use cellos on this song and the band member that used to play the cello left the band in the meantime. The girl the song is about dies, btw. Oh, and the band is from Northern Ireland.

Finally! I don't mind the americans amongst you if you don't know them because they've only done one tour there ever, in Europe they're still pretty well-known amongst the people who know anything about music.

Now, time to get educated. There's many different versions but this is for all you hard-rock lovers... I was also there on the front row so I don't care if there's better versions I could share with you
