FROM WIKIPEDIA

"Kill 'em All"
The apocalyptic ending of Be Invoked was unexpected by many and cemented director Yoshiyuki Tomino's "Kill 'em All" reputation. Characters on both sides of the final fight were given gruesome and shocking death scenes: a very young character being decapitated by gunfire, for instance, was seen as particularly shocking at the time. Be Invoked features the destruction of the Ideon, the death of the entire cast, and a large planet, which resembles Saturn. Their reincarnation is also shown, as fits the series' themes of death and rebirth.

Space Runaway Ideon seems to be the name of the Anime this gif is from. I didn't realise at the time until I took the time to have a look.

So now you know. Very Brikwars for an 1980 anime.

The story sounds pretty epic. In a sick way I'd like to see this film just for some game/story ideas.

Anime is 25% retarded, 25% perverted, 25% boring and 25% awesome. I suppose it depends on the series.

I agree with magic soap that a lot of japanese animation (or just animation with western animation filling the retarded and boring slots).

eureka 7 is one of the better ones.
i'll list some of what it has;
1: A space-flight capable, high speed, secret stealth jet mech carrier.
2: mechs (not the usualy kind though!)
3: a GOOD story.
4: sky surfing know as "lifting"(how the mechs fly! and also a sport!)
5: aliens (well sort of)
6: awesomeness
7: 50 episodes so it's not an epic hike and can be watched in under 2 months of casule watching.
8: pureawesome soundtracks (and those are just 4, not even a choice 4, just put them on as i stumbled on them)
And more that i like;

I wouldn't suggest watching it only for the violence since thats not the focus, character development is more important to the series.

anouther i would suggest is ,The girl who leapt though time, as the title says it's about a girl, who leaps though time.... find out the rest your self lazy bugger it's only a movie. also a story rather than a hacky slashy violence film.

Eureka 7 is the only one I can even stand watching. Well that and Miyazaki movies.

Ok I'll sometimes watch RoboTech when it's on and when I was little I loved Knights Of The Zodiac.

But otherwise I agree with Magic Soap.

I thought Akira was ok, it got a standing ovation in the cinema when I went to see it, one of my pals is into anime. I don't watch any anime or bother with the manga comics I just found and liked the gif which loads of people PM'd me about.

I just finished watching Samurai 7, and it's awesome. On the other hand, some Anime is just lame.

I can't really comment on it since I only saw half and it was around 1AM at the time. I've heard it's good though and I'm willing to give it another shot.

Samurai 7 was really good. Finished Basilisk, some of the fighting & concepts were cool, but "eh" about the ending. But some people don't have the time to commit to a series, even short ones. So here are some classic stand alone movies:
* Of course Akira
* Ninja Scroll (a classic)
* Battle Angel Alita (personal favorite)
* MD Geist
* Fist Of The North Star
* Vampire Hunter D (old one & new one)
* Steamboy
* Macross Plus
* Ghost In The Shell
* Wings of Honneamise

If you can stand it: tengen toppa gurren laggan.
though be warned as think this series is sort of a love it or hate it kind of thing.
Act first, then think, then try to find a way to cover up the horrible mess you made.

Well, it's over the top manly action, so it's a definite win.

I'd recommend watching GunBuster.
Minor spoiler: They turn planet Jupiter into a bomb.

Apart from shit storyline, the action scenes in Appleseed are pretty cool.
Also, Princess Mononoke is suprisingly violent for a PG. Arrow shot rips a guys arms off and pins them to a tree, guy gets head decapitated with an another arrow.
