Although there wasn't any huge sieges or battles in the first three episodes I watched, I can only guess that it's just building tension for when the horde comes and destroys the kingdom, or when the walkers get through the wall.

The books are more popular than they deserve, but I assume the show is super ossum since it has Sean Bean in it.
The Black Company books are better, I think, if you want a dark and gritty fantasy setting, and there are plenty better epic fantasy series out there. GRRM seems mostly to appeal to people because so many characters die, but when he kills off the only people he had plot ideas for he winds up with 5 years of writer's block, so the practice has serious drawbacks.

The show was not that good. The First three books were much better. then Martin got full of himself and they went down hill from there.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm rooting for the Targaryan/Dothraki hybrid. Sure the Starks are Scots without kilts, but barbarian hordes are still more manly.
