Ninjago 3d models

So I was watching the last episode yesterday and I was looking at the way the mouths were animated.
The 4 ninja had 2d mouths that animated by swapping out images, like SouthPark.
But the master had a mouth that was modeled in 3D, there was a mouth hole with 3d teeth.

Weird that they would do this two different ways.
