My Nordic blood is predominantly English, with a bit of Irish as well. This explains why practically all of my family is either blonde or red-headed.

Irish, Scottish and Southern English (with some others mixed in obviously).
Kinda wish I had a bit of welsh in me for the hat-trick.

I'm guessing because when your ancestors emigrated to the US of A, they anglicized names. That or they changed their german sounding name during WWI or WWII.

Blitzen wrote:Corporate money does make a difference. In California Proposition 29 would increase the tax on cigarettes by $1, to $1.90. In March it was polling at 67%. It was narrowly defeated, 50.8% to 49.2%. Why the sudden change? The tobacco industry spend $47 million on ads.

Actually, that prop killed itself. Non-smokers were super down to increase the price of cigs because "fuck smokers anyways," and a lot of those who DID smoke wanted to increase the price to help motivate them to quit (which would have ended hilariously).

The extra tax money was claimed to be going into strictly cancer research, and the tobacco industry tried to do their best to say that the definition of "cancer research" was so broad that it wouldn't actually be effective. But the real killer? The money that would have come from the extra tobacco tax was NOT limited to being spent in california - basically, the extra tax would have fallen right through a hole in the bottom of the bag and left the state forever. I'm all for increasing the price of cigarettes, but I'd be more supportive of just a strict tax that goes directly into california funds for roads and schools and cops anyways.

Back to the news from Wisconsin: sounds like the Walker folks withheld the actual jobs data until after the election was over.

New documents released by DWD prove Scott Walker lied about “early released” jobs numbers

Gov Walker’s job report was pure fiction

Obv very leftist-sensationalism-heavy sites, but it's just funny when politicians are so transparent about giving the finger to their constituents. I like the analysis that says that the only way Walker's fake numbers could line up with the Bureau of Labor Statistics' real numbers is if that extra 20% of freshly-employed Wisconsoners are crossing state lines to get jobs in states that don't have Walker for a governor.

No, it's more likely that I'm actually part English or that I'm descended from a German family that was related to the English. The name has been traced all the way back to Germany, so it has not been changed since my family got here back in the early to mid-1800s.

@stubby: I found those sites to be pretty funny. There's a reason that that "fact" hasn't been reported by my local news.

Me too, that's why I picked them. In seriousness though, that fact was all over the national news out where I am, which is why I googled those sites up, and I don't even turn on the lefty channels.

I was going to say that I would have voted independent to break the two-party deadlock, but then i realized that theres no way in hell that an independent would get elected, so I would have to vote for the lesser of the two evils. and then i realized that that is the same style of thinking that leads to a two-party deadlock.

Then i realized i can't vote.

I still haven't heard anything about this in the local news. I really don't know what to make of it.

What I make of it is that everyone in Wisconsin is probably pretty fucking tired of this subject already, haha.
