Store and Sort - Giant Yellow Minifig Head - Any Good?

I saw one on clearance at Wal-Mart.... ALMOST bought it but I truly questioned if the sorting worked well. Read the box on how it supposed to work but in my experience with things like this; the larger items bind up in the holes and just clog the thing up making the thing more of a PITA than solution. There's also way better methods of storing; I was mostly interested in the 'sort by sifting'.

Anyone used one of these? Is there a better way to sort mass quantities of Legos?

I started separating things out and organizing them better now that my son is old enough to appreciate organization =) However it took me many hours over the span of several days to sort through the two Big Bins O'Lego and just find minifigs, minifig parts, minifig accessories, translucent pieces, "cool pieces that could be made into awesome weapons" and angular/wing plates.

How have other people tackled this?
Do you prefer to organize by color, by type, by size, or other method?

I sort by stud dimensions - one box for all the 1x1s, one for all the 2x1s, and so on, further divided between plates and bricks. Then there are special boxes for minifig parts, minifig equipment, technic stuff, etc.

Yeah I sort by colors too, but I just ended up with one giant tub full of light blay gray & another with dark blay pieces...

I need to re-organize...

I keep all my bricks in a bin. It works really well.

I have two large bins and several medium sized ones. All minifigs and accessories are in smaller organized containers.

I tried that (well two really big bins) and it sucks ass. All of the awesome little pieces end up in the bottom and all of the big pieces are on top. So I dig through 5 cubic feet of Legos looking for that one piece I want... My ears start to hurt from all of the noise!

This took a while- it's still in progress, I've got to clear out the old sets and mocs- but I'm sorting by part in a drawer system. Some of the drawers- Plates, Bricks, Round, Slopes, Angles, Rods, Tiles, Special[landscape P.O.O.P.], Hinges, Megablocks, Wheels, and in different places - small tackle drawer - sorted color trans pieces, technic pins and bits. Bins - Technic large items, Bionicle. In a big tackle box- Mindstorms. In a disposed silverware drawer- all minifigs. In several tins- the factions of Defcon. On my shelves- Old mocs and sets. On my floor- three new sets. On my desk- WIPs and scattered projects two inches high.

I badly need to clean.

I have started sorting by what i call "functionality". I have large bins where i keep all 2x2, 2x3 and 2x4 bricks, another one for plates, another for wheels, etc... For smaller parts i use the plastic trays of the multitude of jule calendars i recently bought.

(Each Drawer has a divider in it.)

Drawer 1: Bricks/Flat plates
Drawer 2: Minifigs/Vehicle pieces
Drawer 3: Sloped bricks/Misc.
Drawer 4: Technic pieces
