Cooperative Roleplay

Post by Olothontor » Mon Jul 26, 2010 1:26 pm

Here's an interesting thought that I may put into action with a select few players. The concept is as such:

There is a game master, as usual, and the game runs just like any other RPG; in-character dialogue, witty banter, some combat, etc. However, every time the player takes a significant action (like attempts to warm up to someone who doesn't like him, or tries to hit someone in combat), a D6 is rolled by the GM. Depending on the stats of your character, you will either succeed or fail.

Here's the kicker. If you succeed the roll, you get to decide what happens as a result of your action (you buy the person a few drinks and become distant friends over the course of a few minutes, or you swing your axe and cleave the guy's head off, to follow the previous example). If you fail the roll, the GM describes what happens.

That said, there will be more rules on the way later. Currently I'm thinking along the following lines:

Stats
  • - Fortitude: This stat affects your character's strength and his ability to withstand attacks, pick up or drag large objects, or land hits in close combat.
    - Agility: This stat is your hero's overall sureness of footing, and can affect things like your character's balance, his ability to fire a weapon, or his likelihood to dodge a punch.
    - Charm: This stat is your character's personal chutzpah, looks, and his ability to talk his way out of things. He can use Charm to make friends in high places or gather information from unsuspecting mooks.
    - Intellect: This stat is your hero's common sense, thinking power, willpower, and reason. He can use it to attempt to figure out puzzles, obtain subtle hints from the GM, or many other various uses.
    - Luck: This stat is your hero's overall ability to be lucky, or unlucky, and provides him with an additional few daily bonuses that he can apply wherever he likes.
Now, the deal with stats is as follows: The number of the stat is the number you get to apply as a bonus to any rolls you make when you attempt an action involving that stat (with the exception of Luck, wherein the number of points in Luck equals the number of +1 bonuses you can apply to any roll throughout the game per session/day). Your character gets 8 points to distribute amongst his stats. No stats may go above 4 or below -1 (yes, you can go into negatives). All of your stats start at zero, and spending on point adds 1 to the stats previous total.

Example: Derek is making a spiffy new adventuring bard for a game his friend is running. He decides he wants his Bard to be called Fyn and that he wants him to be pretty charismatic and lucky, but a bit lacking in the physical department. Therefore, he spreads his points like so:
  • Fortitude: -1
    Agility: 1
    Charm: 4
    Intellect: 1
    Luck: 3

So, he takes a penalty to Fortitude rolls, but in all others he has a bonus of at least 1. He also gets three +1 bonuses that he can apply to whichever rolls he wants along each day of in-game time. Gerry is ready to take on the world!

I think this sounds fun, I'll take a spot. I'll post my stats later today, I've got other stuff I gotta do.

Alright, two player spots left.

Don't make a character yet, though, we'll still need to decide on a setting.

I'm going to get screwed over by my procrastination... but I truly can't resist. Sign me up.

One spot left! Once we have all three players, we'll talk about the setting, then make characters and get down to business.

All spots taken. Brilliant.

Now, as a group we should decide on a setting. Do we want a high fantasy setting (Dwarves, Elves, Humans, etc), a steampunk setting, a futuristic setting? Throw out suggestions and we'll see what happens. Keep in mind that we must all agree.

Well, I think everyone's good and tired of a Post-Apoc setting, so that one's out.

Arkbrik just resumed his game of fantasy, but I think it just went beyond any setting we can define.

I, for one, would like to play Steampunk, having been brainstorming ideas for a LampLighter army for about a week. :P

What do you guys think?

Perfectly willing to run Steampunk, I have a few ideas of my own.

I'd be fine with doing steampunk, but I think it would be cool to do a false paradise kind of thing, and we're supposed to uncover the truth or whatnot. You know, a 1984-ish setting.

Stay out of my head! That was pretty much what I was thinking of doing.

1984-isqe? Sounds like fodder for much fun. I'm definitely in with that.

Guess we're going with steampunk dystopia! I'll spin up an introduction so that you guys know what you need to know in order to make characters, then we'll do just that and get this show on a roll.

The setting is BrikWars. Very simple.
