Secret Santa

Postby Olothontor » Sat Nov 27, 2010 4:02 pm

I signed up for the Secret Santa event over on Pixelation. Secret Santa, in case you're unfamiliar, is a sort of gift-swapping event where everyone signs up, and then all the participants are PM'd with the person they're giving their gift to so they can plan accordingly.

In this case, your goal as a participant is to sprite something for your giftee, based on what they posted as their interests in the Secret Santa thread.

My giftee (Kren) said he likes mechatronics, and having looked up what it is I couldn't think of much that's truly related.

So, I started a mockup of a game based around the concept of a butt-baby between DoDonPachi and the Metal Slug series.

Anywho, this is the progress thread, for feedback. Post as you see fit. I'll be updating every now and then to show progress and get critique from those of you who give it.

As usual, my goal got turned on its head in the beginning throes.

So now I'm doing a mockup based on the following concept:

Code: Select all
What would happen if DoDonPachi and the Metal Slug series had a butt-baby?

I intend to find out.

So far, I haven't made much progress, but it's enough to show, I guess.

Much progress since this morning. First test enemy done, character polished (still not happy with him, though), and a background powered through.

Pretty cool idea for a gift-giving thing. I like the idea.

The game looks pretty good so far, but it also seems like just another platfromer. I'm not saying change it, I'm just saying there's not much to say. Except the background is a little dark, to me it just looked black until I looked closer.

Yeah, I tried to make the background subtle.

Bit of further progress:

Now with 200% more oversized cannon. Whoopee!

Recently stumbled across a completely free GameMaker clone called Scirra Construct. It's truly great, and comes with some neat out-of-the-box features like a 2D lighting system and a really good physics engine.

This has spurred me to begin working on making this into an actual game, called Keigon (I dunno what that is, it made the job of "working title" mainly on the premise that it sounds cool).

If you want, feel free to post storyline suggestions for our hapless protagonist-avec-huge-gun. If I can't set this apart from your average platformer in terms of playstyle, then I could at least create a unique plot.
