Smoke and Flag Animation Test

Post by Leonardo812 » Thu May 29, 2008 9:00 pm

First off, I'm calling this an animation test, but it really has no stop-motion animation whatsoever. The main character doesn't even move. But there's a reason: This is an effects test. In particular, to test out making smoke as well as animating a lego flag.

The lego flag is a 3d model, and the smoke is an animated particle system. Both were done using only free programs, which means that if you lazy chaps actually set your minds to it, you could do this too!

Anywho, here are the links:

Blender, eh? I tried to learn that program but alas, my short attention span got the best of me and I never really went anywhere. Anyways, that's a pretty impressive animation.

because he felt like it.
Act first, then think, then try to find a way to cover up the horrible mess you made.

Considering he is a brickfilmer, it's absolutely normal to do this kind of stuff.

Hypothetically speaking, were I to make a film in which I needed smoke or animated flags, I would want to be comfortable with the effect. That is what this test achieved.

In reality, I'm about to make a space film in which I need a lot of smoke. So I did a test. And while I was at it, I decided to digitally add an animated flag.

Quite nice Leonardo. They look like excellent work. Make sure to post the space movie when you're done with it. :D

Worked well. Looked far better than anything that I could have done. If you want to make it seem more, say, realistic next time (I know, we Brikwarriors shiver at the word), you might want to try a greater range of flag movements, instead of the simple "perfectly light breeze" waving.

I second Bonn-o-Tron's guess: Blender?

Yes, I did both the flag and the smoke in Blender. The flag is a 3d model with an animated texture, and the smoke is a textured particle system.
