Are you kidding me?! A shotgun doesn't just flick out buckshot/slugs at air-rifle velocity, it blasts them out! A direct hit to the head would blow the brains out, not bounce off the face! For a long range weapon, I'd take a Beretta M95 sniper rifle. Those babies can penetrate armored glass, and at long range.

yeah, but what would be the point of that, as far as I know zombie heads are not as though as armoured glass.

a beretta would be an excellent choice, but it's overkill AND incredibly loud. the more noise you make, the more you tell zombies "hey! fresh meat over here!"

yes, shotguns blast out shells at tremendous power. but you need a DIRECT hit to the head from fairly close distance to actually cause brains to blow out. at farther distances, all that happens is a bunch of pellets are stuck all over the zombie, lodged maybe an inch or two deep. very few, if any of them, would have the power at that distance to actually break skull bones.

You guys have one thing all wrong. Pellets are what you use to kill birds on the wing. What you want is anything with "aught" in the name, thus firing, essentially, a bunch of bullets (slugs technically), and im not talking about rifled slugs that act like a rifle.

How about a quick review of terms, to make sure we're all on the same page for shotguns?

A shotgun has many types of ammunitions, but only a few of them could be found easily:

The Slug, that basically turns the shotgun into a rifle. I can't say for certain if it's as good as a rifle or not though.

The Buckshot, probably one of the easiest ammo to find for a shotgun, since it's used by most police force, and for hunting. It's rated from 4 (the smallest shot size) to 0000 (or four-aught, like Chessboxr mention, witch is the biggest shot size).

The Birdshot and Smallshot, witch are compleatly useless for anything but killign birds, at best.


As effective as buckshot may be, they have two problems: low range (they start loosing penetration after maybe 25 yards), and low penetration (skulls are rather thick, and small bullet have less energy to break through it). The only point they really have for them, is that they're slightly more likely to hit.

well right. a shotgun sends so many damn little pellets that anything with a working nervous system is suddenly in too much pain to do anything but scream.

IF you're using a shotgun though, i'd stick to slugs if you are alone, but buckshot in a group. slugs make the shotgun more or less a rifle, but with less accuracy and range, and much higher kickback. of course, you get more power per shot, but that's not really necessary if a single rifle bullet's already enough to take out a zombie.

if you're in a group, use the buckshot. you've got other people to take care of rifle duty for you, so you can specialize on close combat and the utility functions of a shotgun. nothing blows off door handles like a 12 gauge!
