Armor question

Can someone clear up the reason why some character card have a fixed numerical Armor rating and some have a dice rating? Do you roll that amount of dice to SET the armor rating? Or is the rating variable requiring a roll each time?

You roll each time.

The static 4 armor rating for minifigs is to speed up the game. Everything else you roll for each time.

You roll each time.

But then how do you handle combined damage.
Do you roll your armor roll for every time he gets attacked or do you add all damage together and then roll your armor against that.

Combined damage is counted as all one single attack. You only roll armor once.
