Okay, so I'm not much of a metalhead, in fact I'm barely a hipster.

The Metal Bands that I listen to
-Iron Maiden
-Megadeth
-Turisas
-3 inches of blood
-Sabaton
-Alestorm
-Heidevolk

I seem to recall IV once making a post about the pillars of metal. But i think it may have been deleted.

I like Ratt. The look / characteristics were oh so wrong but at the time it was normal, now it's just funny and the music is still awesome and at the end of the day that's what counts.

Accept is good, and is also not hair metal.

Yeah they're really good, U.D.O. is also awesome (no wonder). Gotta love that 'hay guise I'm missin' one of ma lungs' gurgly voice. He sings better nowadays than he did with Accept though.

These links ARE metal history:

The Map of Metal: http://mapofmetal.com/#/home

And this "Family Tree" (although I don't completely agree with it):

What's Grunge doing there? Grunge killed metal at the end of the '80s. And Judas Priest is powermetal? :)

It's indeed a nice list for some people to look at to get a rundown on some of the 'essential' bands, but it hardly tells an established metalhead anything new and doing this for one era of metal alone would already be a quite vain attempt

I think grunge did more good than harm to metal, because after the shortage of metal, rediscovering it made an even bigger boom.

Also, imho the Map of Metal is a better educational site on the subject.

Hah. Shortage of Metal? I wish I could link you that interview where Jeff Waters talks about how many metal bands were forced to change their sound (Annihilator included) when Grunge came up lest they'd be kicked from their record label and how many died because of it. Besides Metal has never again been as grand as it was in the '80s.

Kinda true, but you gotta admit the people who sticked to Metal those days were the real fans, which went kinda underground until Kurt died.

Priest? Power Metal? You'd be more correct to label them as British new wave, even though they'd been around since 1970.
