Basically you start on a small island like the one above, with a chest filled with stuff that you need to survive (pumpkin seed, melon slice, bucket of lava,2 ice blocks...)

My attempt so far:
Image
Agriculture, the need to gain materials and food!
Image
Industry! making versatile materials such as cobble, Or turning wood into charcoal!

I completely removed the block, abseiled down with water and built a wooden platform under the dirt, then dug all the dirt out!

Looks a bit like Survival Island with an attempt to be even more minimalistic.

I know that I could beat it, so there is no point trying.

Next challenge: Visit the Nether! :-P

it's MUCH more difficult than survival island. you get ONE bucket and no more metal. fall off with any thing you can't replace you need to restart.
In survival island you have tons of resources, here you have very few.

But then again once you are settled in, you have an infinite amount of wood and cobble. It's almost impossible to fall down and food shouldn't be a problem neither. Maybe you can even make some mobs spawn. The big question is: What is next?
It's like:
GAME OVER! YOU WON!
BACK TO MENU
>CONTINUE?<
and you choose to continue. That is the moment the game becomes boring because there is no point in staying any longer, no further goals to reach, no more achievements to achieve.

Next challenge: Build a bridge at least five blocks wide and set out until you reach solid ground.

reaching solid ground is illegal by the rules.

There is a set of challenges such as making a mob trap. But yes this is a terminating challenge, you cannot play forever. you can "win", but in the same way you can "win" minecraft normally, get seeds, make farm, done. infinitely survive.

The real challenge in Minecraft is not to survive, but to create what you want within the limitations of Survival Mode. Using Inventory Hack or Fly Mods is cheating. If you want that you can simply play Creative Mode. Or use MC Edit.

I look forward to the Adventure Mode that was announced some months ago.

I thought the point of Minecraft was to make a nice castle on a multiplayer server, put a sign on the door saying that its vacant, and rigging it with TnT?
