WELL minecraft works again for me! and to celebrate here are some screen shots of my first world, from way back when i first got the game in 1.6 [still under construction]

That's pretty awesome, but if you used other materials than just cobblestone, it would look even better.

Let us not forget that it looked far worse back then. They lowered the contrast of it within recent months, and it looks FAR better, comparatively. But, yes, in large groups even the improved cobble texture is a bit of an eyesore, if for no other reason than everything has too much texture from a distance.

Then again, to be fair, if he did this all in Survival mode (which is most likely), then cobble is what you usually end up having the most of.

I usually end up with chestloads full of cobble after some hours in the mine. But by that time I also have tons of coal to smelt the cobble to smooth stone which in turn can be crafted to stone bricks easily. And the combination smooth stone & bricks with some marble here and there is a win and always to prefer over mass cobble.

I like making my towns out of wood, partly because I really like the way logs, planks and stairs look together, and partly because you can burn them down when you're bored of the world.

a. I originally tried to vary the houses, some wood some stone but back then it looked horrible, [i never tought to make each house out of wood and cobble]

b. I mainly use cobble because my mines are 7x7 holes I dig. Just finished my second one, starting my third

c. I used most of my coal for torches throughout Creepersbane, the Undercity, and the massive cave system i found to the north.

d. I am planing on utilizing stone bricks to remodel most of the houses. All i need is a design that looks good.

Even when I have tons of coal I hate to waste it. I set up tree farms to provide myself with infinite wood to burn instead.

I'm finding with the last couple of updates that I don't end up with as much cobble, since the cave systems have been expanded so much, especially with the ravines and abandoned mines. It's a lot faster to just wander through them and grab the exposed minerals than to do any exploratory mining myself.

I'm also finding that creepers are ten times as annoying as they used to be.

One stack of coal can smelt eight stacks of cobble or be used to craft four stacks of torches. I usually have about 10 stacks of coal waiting in my chests and when I explore caves, I find coal much faster than I use it. Same for classic strip mining. I've never run out of coal ever so I don't think I'm wasting it.

Why are you digging square shafts from the surface down? All the good stuff is a the bottom. When you search for ores a Branch Mine is the most effective method. You end up with the same amount of cobble as in your method but you have searched a volume six times what you heave..

i dig them because i like them, it was the way i started off my first major mine [in my second world, it is a pit around the size of a chunk] and i have loved it ever sence.
