I still say that cave mining is the way to go.

Cave mining is ideal- branch mining works well because it's a great way to get into diamond-filled caves without having to excavate the entire landmass you're working on.
Strip mining is only really effective on the first tunnel you make (you want it wide so you can have stairs and minecart tracks there), after that unless you're looking for mountains of cobble you won't want to do it.

that is exactly why i do it. i could not care less about anything other then iron and coal. what i really want is cobble.
