Seeing that I have no ball joints at all, I find myself in this situation quite often. But yes, if you make it work, Technic joints make things look baws.

Star Wars hinges and ball hinges look lame and the SW ones are weak. Technic on the other hand looks all industrial and stuff, and can be much stronger. That's the other motive for going in this direction. I don't have any pictures yet.

I prefer the ball joints used in the Bionicle sets. They give a large range of motion that's hard to make any other way.
