Can't get on Wookiepedia right now but I read something to the effect that Lucas's plan is to have the original cuts of the films disappear completely so that in 100 years people will only remember Star Wars with the crappy cgi. He basically said "Even people who don't like it can't do much since the VHS tapes will only last 30 or 40 more years tops. This is my vision for how the movies should have been and that's that."

He's naive about today's world then; today's technology combined with Star Wars nostalgic zealots simply won't allow this. It's really not hard at all to convert the original VHS to a digital copy, distribute it freely around the world, and therefore keep it alive as long as people want to keep it alive.

I'm trying to remember... I had those VHSs not long ago... but I might have gave them away when we moved recently. Despite that I'm sure you can find a digital copy of the originals if you know where to look.

Plenty of folks had it on Laserdisc also. Those things last forever.

Now that you mention it I've only begun to notice how out of place those aliens are. At one point the ugly singer's arm even passes right through one of the other aliens, LOL.

Dug around our Big Box 'o VHS... found them =^.^= It was the STAR WARS TRILOGY Special Gold Edition VHS BOX SET from 1997. So not THE originals but before all the bullshit was added.

If you want them I can ship them to you. I was just about to throw them out honestly. We don't even have a VHS player hooked up now and doubt I will bother with this stuff ever again.

The ones from '97 had stuff added to them. That's the first wave of the remake stuff that Lucas did, with Greedo shooting first, CGI dewbacks, etc. They're still better than the newest ones, but still. I remember because that's all I had as a kid until I found the original VHS from the 80's at a yard sale.

It was the box set that had Yoda, Luke, and Vader on it.... but my son long since destroyed the box so I can't verify =P I looked on one of the movies and it said 1997 so I assumed it was the gold box set from 1997 but the box is different than the 1997 gold box set. Was there a non-gold box set from 1997 also?

Maybe I should pop in A New Hope and see who shoots first? O_o

Hmmm, I'm not sure then. I know '97 was the year they "remastered" everything and put in CGI and stuff, but they might have made two box sets, one being the originals.

Yeah the set I had was a little different. Was a white box that had a clear plastic sleeve over it. The individual movie boxes are different as well. I tried looking around the web but can't seem to find the exact name of this box set or what year it came out.

I've got a boxed DVD set that blares the feature "Includes Special Bonus: Classic Theatrical Versions". Although I haven't seen the movies in a while... Maybe they're actually on there? I'll get back to you on that one.
