LOTR Battles

Post by Paco » Mon Jan 02, 2012 1:50 am

Last week, my friends and I marathon watched the three extended LOTR movies, and did some BrikWars in between. There were two battles, the first of which was the Black Riders attack against Aragorn and the Hobbits at Weathertop. Here's the first battle, the second is a few posts down.
----------------
Image
Starting Overwatch

Image
Three of the Ringwraithes starting points.

Image
The Fellowship Starting Point, with the Hobbits and Aragorn around the fire.

Image
The other side of Weathertop, where the Witch King and another RingWraith started.

Image
A better view from the ground level.

Turn 1

Image
Merry (ginger hair), being expendible, goes off to face the wraiths, while Pippen curls up next to the fire, "conserving his energy". Frodo grows a pair and decides to face off with them as well instead of dropping his sword and crawling like he did in the movie.

Image
Sam also jumps into the fray, and manages to accomplish Jack shit.

Image
The Witch King sneaks around the back. The other wraiths attack but they sucked and didn't do anything.

Image
Aragorn appears with a torch to distract the wraiths.

Image
He kills one, setting him aflame like a gasoline water balloon.

Turn 2

Image
Pippen sees a wraith that snuck in through a hole in the wall and scurries away to distance himself from it.

Image
Merry absconds from combat and takes Pippens sword so he can dual-wield.

Image
Frodo and Sam take a step in badass, managing to each kill a wraith.

Image
They victorious embrace in an ambiguously d a p p e r manner.

Image
Sam then does a downward thrust and stabs the Witch King, but fails to kill him.

Image
The Witch King ignores the fat hobbit and stabs Frodo through the heart with his flail.

Image
The other wraith crit fails, sending himself into the campfire.

Image
Aragorn then uses his heroic feat to thrown his sword at the Witch King, impailing him. It fails.

Image
*facepalm*

Turn 3

Image
Pippen throws Merry into the fire in an attempt to crush the wraith into the fire.

Image
Frodo falls off the watchpost.

Image
Sam uses his action to get Frodo to his feet.

Image
Aragorn then throws flaming Merry at the witch king.

Image
Completely immolating both of them.

Victory to the Fellowship!

Nice battle! Also, that's a lot of squid-headed jedi minifigs in the back.

Only in BrikWars. Can't wait for more awesomeness.

This reminds me of when me and some friends saw all the extended LOTR movies, then played a LOTR roleplaying adventure through the night, staying awake with wine and chocolate. Good times.

And now for the second battle we did that night, Helm's Deep!

Image
An Overwatch of Helm's Deep.

The teams were:
*Rohan + Elves [Hero: Haldir]
*Theoden
*Uruk-hai Suicide Bomber/Olympic Torch Runner
*Gimli
*Legolas
*Aragorn
*Orks
Image
The Uruk-Hai suicide Bomber/Olympic Torch Runner, conveniently placed right in front of the explosives.

Image
The Rohirrim and Elven f.orces. The elves (peach) are mostly in the courtyard, but Haldir (blond hair) and two others are on the wall.

Image
The right column. On the far left of the wall is Gimli, and Aragorn is with the Crown shield. You can also see the wide variety of orks involved.

Image
Foreshadowing.

Image
And the top of the main hall. Theoden is at the front with the crown.

Turn 1

Image
Rohan's archers fail to hit anything, and Theoden kicks down a crate of fire onto the walkway to block the advance.

Image
Haldir drops his sword, and everyone else does nothing.

Image
Gimli also does nothing.

Image
Legolas, being one of maybe three ranged units, fires, killing the Drummer Troll. Despite gaining first blood, the drummer troll would have had no effect on the game, and was purely cosmetic. Great job.

Image
Legolas then rolls over and tries to fire again, but fails.

Image
The Uruk-Hai suicide bomber/olympic torch runner jumps into the explosives.

Image
What ensues is mass carnage, as half of the soldiers on the wall are killed and nearly the entire front line of elves is crushed by rubble.

Image
But Aragorn gets up, being too badass to die from something like that.

Image
The rest of the orks then move out.

Image
Half move to take the gatehouse.

Image
The other half move towards the hole in the wall.

Image
And four of the Kit Fisto squad climb a ladder to engage Legolas.

Turn 2

Image
Those who survived the blast begin to rebuild the wall.

Image

Image
Well, that was a waste.

Image
Theoden then begins to thrown things down at the orks. An empty cauldron (does nothing), and a heavy soldier (kills the soldier, does nothing to the ork). It's not very effective.

Image
Gimli gets ready for the orks to step off of the ladder.

Image
Three orks are then killed by an explosion. (?)

Image
While a Naultian is beheaded.

Image
and a troll slaughtered.

Image
The orks respond to the rebuilding of the wall by hacking it up again.

Image
Gorkbachov jumps onto the flames in the name of Communism, smothering them with his body.

Turn 3

Image
At least one ork manages to get into the courtyard. Meanwhile, Haldir and the archer captain are placed in an awkward position. (This was really how they landed after the explosion!)

Image
They confess their relationship.

Image
The ork's homophobia causes them to experience fear, paralyzing them.

Image
Some more are then killed.

Image
Aragorn then jumps down to kill some more, but it slaughtered by responce actions.

Image
A molotov cocktail is then thrown at the courtyard, killing everyone inside it!

Image
The gate is finally breached.

Image
There is only one guard inside seperating the orks from the caves where the children are hiding.

Image
An Overwatch of the carnage. You can see that the left ladder was toppled, and all the orks slaughtered there. Some elves and knights came down to face the invaders, but were killed. The rest of the knights on the right side of the hole are either stuck in combat with the lockjaw orks (in orange, fighting with Gimli and another knight) or went into the building to defend the children. There are only six orks left near the hole, one archer firing at Gimli, three attacking Gimli, and four at the gate. Though there are more orks, the defenders have four heroes (Legolas, Gimli, Theoden, Haldir) against the orks, who have no hero left.

Image
The lockjaw orks gang up on Gimli, but fail to kill.

Turn 4

Image
Theoden retreats to the back exit to the gatehouse.

Image
He begins to guard the exit to where the children are hidden.

Image
Gimli overkills a lockjaw. Haldir uses his intriguing-besti-sexuality to turn the other lockjaw to his side.

Image
The orks shake off the effects of the fear and gang up on Legolas.

Image
DEAD.

Image
A frenzied melee breaks out in the gateroom.

Turn 5

Image
The last Lockjaw is killed.

Image
Haldir kicks down the ladder like a badass.

Image
Haldir also kicks a brick into an ork's face.

Image
The last elf on the left wall is killed by arrowfire.

At this point we called the game. We had Gandalf and Eomer made, and declared that they came in with an offscreen cavalry and slaughtered the remaining orks. Overall, I'd say these went over pretty well with everyone at the party. Special thanks to NAME AND ADDRESS WITHHELD for hosting, and Ogel for building the amazing Helm's Deep field, as well as providing all of the Fellowship and many of the other figs here.

Badass. Once again I must applaud the scenery and the use of tactics. The defenders building the wall back up right in front of the orc's noses was hilarious.

All you gotta do now is use some lighting compensation to fix the pics that are too bright.

Btw, what happened to your forum battle?

It's still up in the air, I've had to keep delaying it.

First I took most of the baseplates off to use as terrain for a game I did last month, then I took off most of the figs to use in these battles. Computer issues and lack of time haven't helped. It's all still assembled, so it might see the light of day soon. (I've been considering doing it as an intro to medieval combat for my gaming group, and also thought about ways to possibly do a forum battle over YouTube, which could possibly speed up the process)

Amazing. Awesome LOTR battles. Weathertop was hialrious!

:sparta:
This should be in the Rulebook somewhere:

"Any problem on earth can be solved with the careful application of high explosives"
-Valkyrie (the movie)
