I'm just saying that if it's the only thing that stands out to someone who doesn't mess with miniatures, it must be pretty bad.

You really need to get rid of that extra plastic and flash on the front next to the treads. There's also big chunks on the top near the treads. You can take a file or knife to it and get rid of it, but it really makes the difference between a nice looking model and painted pieces of plastic glued together.

So stfu.
I've painted a thing or two in my life, and I've got to agree. File it down and fill in the space with some Green Stuff to smooth it out.

I was just thinking "I wish I lived nearby so I could just drive over there and show you some painting tricks" but then I remembered I do live nearby. What I really should do is drive over there and scare your parents. "Oh yeah, I'm his internet friend, I saw the photos he was posting online and decided to drop by"

Oh my god, I had nearly forgotten. Allow me to present the most common piece of advice garnered from SomethingAweful on the topic of miniatures painting.

THIN UR MOLD LINES

Get some files or an Xacto knife (a light crafts knife will probably work fine too, but then you can't replace blades) and just gently scrape along the lines.

Try dry brushing for armor edges and perhaps terrain effects.

Also, you forgot to sand some bits of the pieces...

 That would be funny, but I would end up being grounded, whether they realized it was a joke or not. Yeah, I'm gonna do some paint touch-ups today and file down those sprue marks you're all having a hissy fit about.

So then extra funny, from what you're saying. It's win-win

MGB- just say you managed to find a guy at the Games Workshop and paid him for a painting lesson.

Stubby- wear a short pink dress and keep telling his parents "hey my eyes are up here"

Keldo-did I even post in this thread before now? I forget and I'm too lazy to check.

I was going to say, the pink dress thing doesn't work so well anymore for horrifying people, but then I remembered that RM's family lives forty years in the past. If he were living in 2012 with the rest of us, even fursuits don't cause the kind of horror they used to; I'd have to wear some kind of obvious giant diaper or something.

40 years in the past? Did the future arrive that fast? I guess I'll just peruse the paper after I come home from school. I wonder what that crazy President Carter is up to now.

Seriously though, if there were nine things I would tell you to really focus on in order to improve your final look, the first three of them have to do with never, never globbing on the paint so thickly:
  • 6. Practice drybrushing to highlight texture and edges.
    7. Practice using washes to emphasize form details.
    8. Practice thinning out the paint by different amounts to have more precise and even covering coats (and to save money on paint).
    9. And of course also clean up sprues and mold lines, like everybody's saying.

Has he not been using paint thinner?

:son:

At least use some water or SOMETHING.

You think this model is still alright, or should he bust out the Simple Green and redo it?
