Oh and to answer your question: 2GB, works fine for my usage.
Really should set up a proper GNU environment on here, windows is clunky, slow and insecure.

Why not a SSD? At that price point it wouldn't change much, and you'd have more reliability and speed.

If it really matters, you guys could try to distribute the load via some kinda p2p program, I am certain something open ended exists that could be used for this purpose, maybe look at some of the stuff people use for botnets?

SSD at the same price point was a third of the storage, and the cost ramped up rather quickly. I've found from past experience that 300 gigs is limiting, so the velociraptor was the best combination of speed, space, and price that I could find.

Get a smallish SSD for the OS and commonly used applications, and a large HDD for storage of everything else.

Well, I mean, you could just get several hard drives? My old machine had 2 500gbs in a mirror array, but if I wanted to I could have had 1TB.

Since the bulk of what I use my computer for involves games, and since most games now run entirely off of the hdd (discs tend to be used only as drm once you get past installation, assuming it even has a disc), having your bulk storage drive be fast is handy for reducing load times. Sure, a ssd for your os would make a good number of things go quickly, but for the relative return they're still rather pricey. Also, the 600g velociraptor was the best price per volume that I could find at the time for fast bulk storage. Based on past usage patterns, I likely won't need more than 600g anyway, at least for several years, at which point prices will have dropped considerably.
