This is absurd, and stupid, and I really wish I didn't have to know imperial conversions. Someone upthred said that metric comes from French, which isn't true. Metre is from the Greek word for "measure", μέτρον (métron). It's true that the "re" ending is from French, but so what. Get over it. Prefixes for the Metric system are mostly in Latin or Greek. Because they're awesome.

Umm... our rulers have cm and inches, our speedometers have km/hr and mph. Don't use 'em, but they're there. It's all a matter of what you're used to: you grew up in America, you (probably) grew up with Fahrenheit, inches, feet, and pounds, so you think in those units, too. Honestly, at least for temperature, there isn't much difference in F and C, except that C is what's used in science equations and crap (and I know some of them use K, not C). For everyday use, either works just fine.
