The main concern at least in my eyes for the mecha is that putting it on legs means you can't make it nearly as heavy as a tank, which means you have a target that is less armored and easier to shoot- the most vulnerable moment for a tank is when it crests a hill- the under-armor is exposed and it cannot shoot back at it's targets. A mecha exacerbates this issue by being even more big and vulnerable (as well as expensive!).

The only practical applications I see for mecha in terms of warfare and industry are for emergency wilderness medical services (especially on tall mountains), special forces, and toys for the rich, kind of like helicopters really.

A good mech would probably be better suited to urban combat than a tank too - being able to turn around in tight corners and whatnot.
