I just saw this, and wtf. This is the wrong way to make a roleplaying game. Starting with the same old paradigm as always (class-based combat-focused DnD style system) and then trying to make the pwnies fit. The right way to do it is to start with the pwnies, and then build a system to fit them.

, I hear you cry, and maybe I should.
Remus: Harry... I'm a werewolf.
Harry: Are you fucking serious?
Remus: Well yes, but I don't see how that applies here.

After having played more open and creativity-encouraging games such as Mutants and Masterminds, I really don't even like DnD. It's too closed-minded, too rules-specific. I'm of the belief that a role playing game should be about role playing, not number crunching and seeing how high you can get your damage. That annoys the piss out of me.

DnD is ok for starters but there are many better systems to try when you mature past this basic stage... many bad ones too but.
I have used the one system (Cyberpunk 2020) to Roleplay for over 20 years. In that time I've made many changes and have adapted it to play all sorts of genre from Space Ship battles to Fantasy and Horror with many different groups. I focus on Character progression and while I listen to my players desires for stuff I also make sure there is always a cost even if it isn't instantly apparent. For example one of the players in a Cyberpunk/Horror genre now has psychotic episodes and can't be controlled at times. He has dependents, a gang of orphaned street children that he must protect. He has suffered a breakdown and the children nursed him through it. I've used torture (in game) on a player that got captured and permanently maimed him (but hey cyberpunk can fix anything more or less). And all players fear my Luck rolls. It's a Stat they all overlook until I adapted it and made more use of it in a way that was fair. You might be wearing Power Armour but all sorts of interesting things can happen if you're luck is shit.

NotSo-Mini-Warhead (he's as tall as Mrs Warhead now after all) has begun to show an interest in Roleplay and wants his friends to play. I may have to tone down the psychological darkness, horror and guts and gore some.

Yeah, what a great idea! What have those poor mice done to us? We should use humans instead!

How sad. We could be feeding starving children in Africa with these mice and we just throw them away?

Screw the children, think of the market for living cat food. Not only will you have fun watching your cat disembowel a mouse, but so will your cat.

Interesting, but I'm still a fan of systems that can be applied to multiple settings.
