...next they will be saying that they found bushmeat in our food!!!

For those that do not know, there is a food safety crisis here in the UK whereby a lot of ready meals described as being "beef" were found to have up to 100% horsemeat in them. The French meat suppliers of Findus were found to be sourcing a lot of their meat from Romania, which is where the horsemeat got into the supply chain in the first place.

Now we're being told that the horsemeat found could actually be donkey. How much worse can it get? (Actually, they found bushmeat being sold on London markets a couple of years back, so it would not surprise me if they next found bushmeat in our ready meals...).

The funny thing is we don't - our food inspection standards are so high we caught this within a couple of weeks of the contamination. All food manufacturers handling meat have to do regular DNA samples of the meat they are using to make sure it is what it is supposed to be. It just goes to show that if one or two meat suppliers cut corners how fast unwanted meats can get into the UK food chain (but also how fast we spot it).

The French have a history of eating horses. That's how most of Napoleans troops made it through the Little Ice Age on marches.

Funnily enough I have no objections to eating horse so long as I know I am buying horse rather than beef and that it has never been injected with certain drugs that are harmful to humans.

What I do object to is buying beef and getting fobbed off with horse, which is the primary issue here.
