One Man's War: Forum RPG

Postby mgb519 » Fri May 24, 2013 9:44 pm

"In the kingdom of Kregas, a massive army of outlaws has declared war from within, taking a sizable swath of land out from the king’s nose. His army is off fighting a campaign against the Kingdom of Alashnir, so he has turned to recruiting from the ranks of wandering adventurers and mercenaries to bolster his numbers, since he has few soldiers to spare."

So I'm looking to do a bit of a test run or my system, since everyone else seems to be doing their forum RPGs all of a sudden. This system is still in the works and is untested or edited, but anyone who has ever fabletopped with me knows that I'm good at improvising in case of emergency.
Rulebook:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-uc ... sp=sharing
Character sheet:
http://www.mediafire.com/view/33u7wb26u ... Sheet.docx
Not everything is necessary, of course. This will be a condensed forum version, and I can walk you through character creation once it comes to that. I'll roll up a character for you if I have to, but I'd much rather you at least try take care of it for yourself.
Feel free to ask any questions. Also, if something is not covered, it means I took it out in order to make changes. Just let me know and I will address it. If sufficient interest is expressed, sign up and setup can begin.

I might play.

What will the game be about?

Rules Question:

mgb519 wrote:A starting player is given 10 skill points to spend freely, where each rank of a skill costs 15 points.

Does this mean that a player can have 10 ranks and then, with experience, each rank costs 15 skill points?
Or that you have 2/3 of a rank you can dump in a skill and then you can put 5xp in to finish the skill later?

I'm actually thinking about changing over to a build point system for character creation. Also, yes. You can begin putting points into a skill and complete it later. I need to come up with equipment prices for character creation, though.

Oh, I already have a setting, a plot, and over a dozen NPCs. I also know how the mechanics work. It's just character creation specifics. Kinda hard to finalize without playtesting.

In the kingdom of Kregas, a massive army of outlaws has declared war from within, taking a sizable swath of land out from the king’s nose. His army is off fighting a campaign against the Kingdom of Alashnir, so he has turned to recruiting from the ranks of wandering adventurers and mercenaries to bolster his numbers, since he has few soldiers to spare.

There's your blurb.

To clarify, do we need to roll 6d6s then roll 6d6s again subtracting the latter values?

You roll two sets of 6 numbers. Which is positive and negative is up to you, but you cannot just roll 12d6es and subtract the lowest from the highest.

Generally, yeah, but there are a few things. First, you don't actually have to pair your two sets of number specifically. If you wanted you could have paired both 6's with 1's. What you're doing is not rolling six pairs of dice, but rather two dice pools. If you're happy with your stats, that's fine.
Size of 0 represents a height of 5-6 feet. This goes up and down in one foot intervals. It affects attack rolls against you, but also increases your carrying capacity by 10 each interval. Serpentines are typically 6-7 feet tall.
What sort of sword are you wanting?

Aside from class buffs, remove skill ranks. You now have 400 creation points to spend freely. You can put whatever is left into GP. Leveling up a skill has been altered-it now costs 20 points minus the score for the associated stat.

Okay, I see. Also, I did the initial stats wrong. I forgot entirely to subtract the 1 so that possible outcomes ranged from 0-5. I can see that starting characters cannot easily start with abilities, which are garnered at stat 5s. I'll reroll it.

Will adjust to size 1 at around 6'10".

Scimitar.

Dandy. I've started working on that and I already notice a marked improvement in the system. However, your skills list is different in the rules than from the character sheet. The skill/stat associations are pretty obvious in most cases but some skills are fairly redundant (which looks like holdovers from earlier editions). Not sure how you wanted to handle that.

As for equipment, I'm fine with the basics plus the sword and some armor (preferably breastplate or chainmail). I'm not sure how shields work (I might want one of those as well). There is a blocking skill and a shields skill but if I can block just as easily with a sword, I'd rather not bother.

Also, I have no idea how much any of that costs or what it does (damage, AP costs, phys resist, etc).

Also also, is the type of attack (Heavy, Swift, Piercing) always determined by the weapon itself (like, sword is always swift) or can I choose to make any of the three with my sword when I attack?

You don't technically have to subtract one for it to work correctly: because naturally the lowest you can roll is 1 and the highest is 6, 6-1=5. I just felt it put the player in the right mindset.

You can in fact get abilities before stat 5s. But to do so, you must have that skill. But if you have 5, then your character could have no knowledge of how to properly swing a sword, but they're just such a natural that they can use abilities. That was the idea behind it.

The character sheet correctly lists all skills. If in doubt, look to the character sheet and let me know where the problem is in the rulebook.

Shields are actually treated as a weapons, where they can be used to bash enemies. However, they also provide a bonus to blocking. So you can block with a scimitar, but you can block more effectively with a shield. I'll get into that more later.

The special attack types are varied from normal attacks. Normal attacks are the point of reference for percentages. Not all weapons have access to all attack types, which is why I listed weapon types. You can switch freely during combat.

Now then, stats:
Scimitar (5 Dam, 5 AP, 3 Crit, 5 Pierce, 10 Weight, 35 GP)
For the record, this is a rather expensive (and effective)sword. Quality craftsmanship and all that.
Chainmail Tunic(5 physical resistance, 0 magical resistance, 15 Weight, 15GP)
For the sake of simplicity, not going to worry about gloves, boots, or helmet.

Armor works exponentially, by the way. Each point of physical resistance is a .95 multiplier for damage. So your natural armor is 77%. Piercing reduces resistance by that amount.

Actually, I'm going to reduce racial physical resistance. Your total is now 4 instead of 5. All other races have had their physical resistance reduced to 0, except for elves who have -1.
