Hi! I could use some advice.

Hey, so I have some scholarship money coming in and I decided I'd been wanting a wargame hobby with flex for long enough so I'm trying this out since I could also use the stuff for RPGs. I really wanted to start by getting enough normal blocks to make terrain. Any advice on what sets I could buy for that would be appreciated.

The LOTR sets are supposedly good as far as scenery and price for pieces go. I haven't technically bought any though, I just got them for Saturnalia.

If you're willing to go MegaBloks, which I'm sure no one really is, they have some pretty cool set/terrain stuff for a decent price.

Whatever you get, look at piece count. Aim for 10¢ per piece or less.

Keep an eye out for Army Builders too. Note that not all Army Builders will be labeled such.

Army builders are sets defined by a low cost (5-15 dollars) having lots of MiniFigs (3 or 4 is pretty good, more than that is awesome) and generally a handful of other parts; usually weapons and maybe a vehicle of some kind.

As the term implies, the purpose of Army Builders is to increase your minifig count without spending a crap ton of money all the same time. 10 bucks for four minifigs and a handful of other stuff is pretty easy to meet. Then, when you have more money to spend, you can buy the brick tubs and/or the bigger sets for making vehicles, terrain, and buildings.
You have the right to agree with me on any and all points. If you give up this right, anything you say can and most likely will be ignored in whole or in part.

It's a holiday in December where men get drunk and have sex with one another.

If you're willing to take some of that spending online, I'd definitely recommend places like Bricklink. You can buy tons of bulk brick if you look in the right vendors. Lego.com also has a "pick-a-brick" thing, but I think their price-per-piece might be a bit high.
