My guitar teacher used to be in a jazz fusion band (not the one posted above), he said it was the hardest thing he ever did.

Thematically, with the improvisation, yes, but I've never seen a sax or a trombone in a metal band.

I am not entirely sure, but I'm pretty sure jazz has more to do with odd time signatures and chord progressions than instruments. Could be wrong, but that's what I've heard...

It generally uses a walking baseline and odd time signatures like 12/8 are fairly common. In free jazz improvisation is key, sometimes there's not even any notation. The similarities end there. Metal developed from blues with Iron Butterfly's "In a Gadda da Vida" which featured some pretty heavy distortion for the sixties.
Have a listen to bill bailey's take on being in a jazz quartet:

This is Richard Cheese, covering slipknot with "People=Shit":

I know a thing or two about metal, my cousin helped to organise this:

Slipknot is not metal.

But metal didn't originate with "In a Gadda da Vida", there were one or two songs predating that song that were also metal. Metal as a whole didn't appear at any given time, the modern definition of metal clashes too much with what was once called metal in the 1960s (Hendrix, You Really Got Me by the Kinks, Some Beatles songs, etc) which makes the very FIRST metal song by modern definition hard to pinpoint, but the first metal bands were defiantly Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest and Black Sabbath. Each of those bands started different schools of metal I still feel are around today, Priest and Zeppelin bringing more high vocals with faster higher guitars, while Sabbath brought downtuned, darker metal because of Iommi's preference to down tune his instruments for comfort.
