Large Humanoid Mech Thing

Post by Quadruple.Digits » Sat Feb 08, 2014 4:21 pm

I was tinkering around yesterday, and I noticed something.
I had A LOT of brown pieces.
So I decided to make something with them.
It started off like this.
Image
Then it grew.

Breakdown of the leg, if anyone's interested.

Yes, that is my music system in the background. It puts out a surprising amount of sound, for its size.
I do have a proper set-up, but that's currently attached to a turntable. I need a 3.5mm adapter for it.

Initially, it was going to be more like a WH40k Scout Titan, but I'd already made Growle's Moving Writing-Desk.
So this happened.
Image
The head was a logical extension of the torso. The chest does have an engine bay in it, but no pics yet. The waist is the main boiler chamber.
Yes, it IS steampunk.
Image
The arms sorta just happened. Also, hands were a no-go as I'd run out of ball-and-socket joints.
Image
Final product, with Snowtrooper for size comparison. It's twice as tall as anything else in my collection, including the buildings.

Diorama
Image
Not quite an even fight.
Image
Again, the size. The Snowtroopers are just taller than the feet.
Also, apart from the cockpit, there's another man piloting the main Uber-Zappy-Death-Ray-Gun. Because precision.

The afore-mentioned Uber-Zappy-Death-Ray-Gun

The secondary armament - 11 gun salute

Personally, I don't think my shoddy photographic skill does it justice.
Approx. 14" tall.

Might give Natalya's ASE a run for it's money.
Or maybe not. Damn, that thing's HUGE.

Not bad, not bad at all, though it does feel a little smoke and mirrors with all the hollow bits. I suppose it's necessary though for balancing.
You might want to invest in a few "friction adder" pieces from hero factory to make it more sturdy (balls just have this nasty tendency to wear out over time and that can cause maintaining poses rather troublesome).

Holy crap, this is amazing. And it's nearly Armored Core-sized too.

@Zharu II: It looks smoke and mirrors because it is smoke and mirrors (at least, the legs are).
The chest is NOT smoke and mirrors, because it has THIS:

But it needs more levers & dials.

Those friction-inducing pieces would be BRILLIANT. It would actually be able to lift the Uber-Zappy-Death-Ray-Gun!

Very neat. I like the cage head and the greebly gun. I kinda dig that its mostly hollow except for the showcase chest. Seems like a clever use of parts.

Honestly that's how I'd build ACTUAL giant mecha, mostly hollow die-cast armor to reduce weight while maintaining structural strength.

Very nice for what appears to be a first time attempt dude, I love the internal greebles and the whole style really works well - if you have any ladder or grill parts I would say try attaching those over the external armour on the legs, arms and chest like how tanks use them for RPG protection, I think it would suit the appearance of this mecha really well.

Keep up the good work.

Impressive...my friend. The legs are sooooo smoking hot, but the rest....no go for me. you need a good inspirational source by the looks of it. keep it up.

I have a good inspirational source. Little do you know, I modeled it on myself.
Alas, my lack of parts don't do me justice.

I really like the legs and the blocky feel of it all, they go well with the body. Umm, this probably makes it up to the waist of my giant robot. I disapprove of the ball joints though. But good job on hiding them in the feet, that makes me feel better about this.
