BrickBattle

Post by Leonardo812 » Fri Jan 04, 2008 4:00 pm

Before I saw Brikwars, I wrote a game called BrickBattle. It is similar in concept to Brikwars, but quite different in rules. It is also based off of studs, not inches. Distance measurements are done in horizontal studs. A vertical stud high is three plates high.

The game is based off of a system of core rules, which you can find on my lovely Freewebs page here.

Play with just the core rules is somewhat uninteresting. One of the things that makes BrickBattle so fun is add-ons. These are like plugins to the core rules. They generally add, not change the core rules.

Here are some add-ons I've written.
- A foliage add-on which alows minifigures to attack and destroy green or brown bricks.
- An explosives add-on for the weapon system which allows for radius based detonations like grenades.
- A "builder" minifig add-on. He can create basic 2 by 2 blocks.
- Vehicle add-ons for vehicles.
- A long ranged weapon accuracy system which allows for hits and misses based on dice rolls and speed.
- A "King" add-on in which the game is won when one player kills the other player's "king".

At the start of each brickbattle, players decide which add-ons to use in the battle as well as a point limit for each army. (Unless, like me, you want unlimited point armies.)

As you can see, the game is all about customization. Players are encouraged to create custom weapons, minifigs with special abilities, and write their own add-ons. So fire rings could do damage. :D

Please tell me if anything is at all confusing so that I can edit the core rules. Also, ideas for add-ons are welcome. I am thinking of writing a "Basic Add-ons" page which lists basic add-ons for the game.

interesting, but i prefer brikwars' current iteration. i don't like keeping track of hitpoints if they're more than 2 or 3, and alot of this is mostly the same things as brikwars

like your whole "add-ons" thing is reflected into brikwars. except instead of calling them "add-ons", we call them "dude. i just got the BEST idea".

and call me wierd, but i prefer inches to studs. i mean sure, studs is more... lego-rific, but most of my battles are sprawled out over a hardwood floor or a tabletop. i don't have THAT many baseplates! also, minifigs have only 7 studs worth of movement? converted to inches, that's about two inches per turn. to me, that's a bit slow. fun fact: the first version of brikwars was done in studs. mike has since changed it so that it's inches, because inches are frankly easier to calculate with.

however i DO greatly approve of your "pose" action that is taken after turns. with the whole prone position and ducking that takes off inches of movements is at times confusing, whereas your method has minifigs automatically taking cover rather than wasting inches to get into a position.

So you think that I should add more movement points.
You know, 7 is ok for small fights, but I was playing a larger battle and I agree that they need more movement. I felt like we spent a lot of time with me moving, he moving, me moving before we actually got to attack.

I added the "pose" thing just a little while ago when I was complaining that if my minifig could only duck like in real life, then he wouldn't get attacked. It turned out pretty well.

I have seen (and even downloaded) your brickbattles game. But unfortunately I have never played it. This is due to lack of opponents.

I did like the use of studs for measuring, you may as well utilize the "Legoness" of Lego.

I am glad to see that you have some add-ons now. I may need to revisit the game and have a bit of a read.

Could you clarify what you meant when you said that you "downloaded" the game? I believe that you might have been referring to a different Brickbattle which is an online game. I just googled "brickbattle" to find it.

I meant, that I downloaded a copy of the rules. I think there were two different versions.
Version1. A very old 2-3 page MS Word version.
Version2. A very image intensive PDF, which was a massive file size.

Does this sound about right, or am still talking about the wrong game.?

The game you are referring to is BrikBattles; www.brikbattles.com.
This and a few other names are very similar and easy to mix up.

Just wanted to clarify and not hijack the thread. :)

Right. Thank you Ramus.
Maybe I should rename it. Any suggestions?

Brikwarz. The z makes it original...

I have two comments. the stud movement measurement works when you consider you can just measure everything through a single lego used like a ruler.

But, we don't need another brikwar game. Though all your rules ideas are more then welcome, and can help improve this one.

Guerre de Briks

It's good because it's French!
Often, literally, a pillow fight but may include similar situations like volleyball, particularly when wardrobe is skimpy and the action is bouncy.

I thought French was the romantic language. Try German, it'll sound angry and intimidating.

Ziegelstein schlachten

May not be completely accurate, but sounds bad-ass.

The P90 (if it wasn't fully auto, it would be the worst gun in the world)

Because of the reaction of the French government in WW2, the French have recived a reputation as surrender monkeys that will haunt them until France is turned into a radioactive crater along with the rest of Europe in WW5 (or whatever the hell number we're up to)
