Battle of the Non-Descript Plains

Post by Doopliss » Mon Jan 12, 2009 11:58 am

Me and my brother, having read up on BrikWars, both got each other lego for Manly Santa Day. He got me an awesome grab-bag of castle stuff with a larger Viking model, and I got him a couple of nasty-looking Mars Mission vehicles. We decided the two gifts would make for a good pick-up game, which works well. If I win, it's obviously because of my superior tactics, and if I lose it's because I got him a better gift.

The resulting battle has next to no Overwatch pictures, since we were too busy taking more fun pictures for that and the camera had trouble saving the aftermath shot for some reason. It's pretty small-scale, with both sides clocking in around 200 CP, so you shouldn't really miss much because of it. Hope you enjoy our first BrikWars battle.

On January 9th, 2009, a Legopian Alliance totally-not-invasion-force crossed the Legopian Miniforce’s borders to throw them a surprise party. Within a few minutes, they encountered a colossal Miniforce vehicle unlike anything seen before. The totally-not-invasion was on.

Legopian Alliance:

At the vanguard is the hero Urist McDorfington and his seven Viking Warriors. To the west, a single mounted Knight. Behind the vanguard is Demonic Tinkerbell, guarded by three heavy infantry. In the rear are three ballistae and the giant Elfkicker 9000. The Elfkicker fires two flaming ballista bolts a turn, and boasts a frontal shield to protect its operators and firing mechanism.

Dominating the battlefield is the Gatling Drill Walker (GDR), a giant quadruped vehicle. Aside from the laser drill in question it features a number of lighter lasers, as well as a high-yield mortar. To its east is an un-launched Alien Gunship. Later intelligence would report that both of the GDR’s pilots were Heroes in skill, if not ego.

No other units were seen.

Turn 1: Legopian Miniforce

Image

GDR opened the confrontation by firing its mortar.

Image

The entire Viking Warrior squad, too busy whipping itself into a frenzy to think about things like dodging, was slain. Urist was a bit more clever.

Image

The Alien Gunship took off and opened fire on Demonic Tinkerbell, missing.

Image

No other movement was detected.

Turn 1: Legopian Alliance

Demonic Tinkerbell sprinkles some pixie dust on her Heavy Infantry escort and retreated. Urist McDorfington charges the GDR and its exposed windshield, leaping forward.

Image

Urist smashes into the windshield like a bug, falling off.

The ballistae open fire on the Alien Gunship. While theoretically dealing damage, the bolts merely bounce off its massive hull, though the assault forced it to power down one of its many, many guns. The Knight nobly dashes towards the GDR to aid Urist. The Elfkicker also fires at the Gunship, with no effect.

Image

The Heavy Infantry, now capable of flight, charge the Gunship.

Turn 2: Legopian Miniforce

Image

A ninja appears from nowhere and decapitates Urist McDorfington! And he didn’t even manage to do anything…

The Alien Gunship fires at the Heavy Infantry, missing. Similarly, the GDR fires its light lasers at the approaching Knight…

Image

…With no effect.

Turn 2: Legopian Alliance
The Knight changes his target and rushes the distracted ninja (a hero, name of Neenja)! Neenja catches what would otherwise be a lethal blow in his armpit, winded, but not much else. Even the horse colliding with him accomplishes nothing. The Knight attacks Neenja again, with no effect. Somehow out of GDR’s range, the Ballistae advanced.

Image

The flying Heavy Infantry crashed headlong into the Alien Gunship’s pilot, knocking it to its death.

Annoyed with the Artillery Squad’s incompetence, Demonic Tinkerbell takes over the Elfkicker and fires at GDR.

Image

The first shot misses, but the second breaks through the windshield and destroys the controls!

Due to Tink’s interaction with it, the Elfkicker 9000 can now fly! Not that it matters.

Turn 3: Legopian Miniforce

Image

The unpiloted Alien Gunship crashes to earth, producing the first proper pyrotechnics display in the battle.

The Pilot Hero climbs out of the now-burning cockpit and takes Urist’s old axe.

Image

Together, she and Neenja kill the Knight.

GDR, its gunner still inside, takes aim at the Elfkicker 9000 with its Gatling Beam Drill.

Image

The Elfkicker 9000’s shield is destroyed!

Turn 3: Legopian Alliance

Image

The horse continues running, headlong into one of GDR’s engines. It’s knocked unconscious.

The Ballistae continue to advance at a snail’s pace.

Image

The Heavy Infantry head towards GDR’s second cockpit, breaking off formation for a three-pronged attack.

Tink heads for the frontlines. She waves her wand, reanimating the Viking Warriors’ dismembered corpses and weapons. She launches them towards the Miniforce’s heroes!

Image

Neenja survives the attack; Pilot hero is not so lucky (or ninjy).

The Elfkicker Firing Squad, having just been slapped around by an annoyed Demonic Tinkerbell, take much more care when firing. They launch off two perfectly aimed bolts at Neenja…

Image

Who deflects them both, fire and all!

Turn 4: Legopian Miniforce

Neenja tosses a smoke bomb at his feet…

Image

When the smoke clears, Neenja is still exactly where he was previously, doubled over in a coughing fit.

The GDR’s gunner fires a Mortar shot point-blank at one of the Heavy Infantry…

Image

It hits cleanly, vaporizing him and shattering the cockpit’s windshield!

Turn 4: Legopian Alliance

The remaining two Heavy Infantry collide with the second Hero Pilot, and themselves, failing to deal much damage.

Image

The worthless Ballistae continue to advance. A very ticked-off Tink heads over to harass them.

The Elfkicker fires off another two perfect shots at Neenja…

Image

Neenja rolls over while coughing, deflecting both bolts in the process. He’s just too fast.

Turn 5: Legopian Miniforce

Hero Pilot 2, too overwhelmed to fire, turns the Gatling Beam Drill straight down…

Neenja vanishes into the shadows. Everything else near GDR, including GDR, is incinerated by the resulting explosion.

Survivors:

Legopian Alliance:
Demonic Tinkerbell
Worthless Artillery Squad

Legopian Miniforce:
Neenja

The Nth Legopian War:
Battle 1: Battle of the Non-Descript Plains
Battle 2: Battle of the Unnecessary Wall
Battle 3: Outbreak at Ribannald
Filler 1: Capture the Princess
Filler 2: Battle for Ascention
Filler 3: Legopia versus the Manly Santa Day Spirit

Post-Battle Notes:
-I only remembered the bailing rules after calculating the damage that incinerated my Vikings.
-In retrospect, my deployment was terrible. The Ballistae were too far out of range to do anything for the entire battle, and even the Elfkicker had to move up to get a shot off on GDR. My Vikings were crammed together like sardines when my brother's primary anti-infantry weapon was that mortar. Ah, well. Live and learn.
-The Elfkicker 9000 is garbage. It has a Size 3 launcher shooting Size 1 projectiles, so it hits on a 6 and deals 1d6 damage. Too inaccurate for anti-infantry purposes, too weak for anti-armor. It can shoot two rounds at once, but they both aim separately. Its fire might have come in handy if there were wooden targets to attack, but sadly there were none. It has since been reverse-engineered to help with my latest creation.
-Neenja's clothing was from our old Lego stash, but the head was from Mars Mission.
-Tinkerbell was recruited because, as the lines formed up, it was clear that I needed fliers. Since we only had dragon wings, though (we seem to have lost the dragon itself), she became a demon as well. This worked out for the better, since we didn't have any dresses, and the only blonde hair was Draco Malfoy's. The wings were attached with hot glue. Some tests suggest that it comes off just fine if you want to use the materials for something else, but something tells me Tink will be a recurring character in my army.
-From now on, if my brother wants multiple heroically-skilled units, he'll need to deal with the crankiness like everyone else.
-The Elfkicker just happened to start rolling 6's after Tink fired it. She didn't actually do anything to the Artillery Squad.
-Almost every attack levied against Neenja included at least one Bonus Die. He just got more bonus dice for every one.
-It just didn't feel right sprinting with artillery.

yeah, this is a really cool battle. I really wish I knew how to work photoshop/GIMP magic to make awesome lasers and explosions, but alas! I can't.

Also I'm really impatient D:

Why do you say that? Action, photo, result just has such great dramatic flow...

Mostly I just steal pictures of explosions/fire from the internet and abuse blur. :P

I always thought BrikWars and other such wargames took huge amounts of patience themselves...

I actually really like the plain carpet. It feels desolate and a perfect place to stage a Brikwar

Yeah, but it's a pain to stand minifigs up on it...

Cool battle. Love the vehicles.

Why all the laughter? It's so much better when the writeup is ABOVE the photos.
