Dwarf Fortress, the Fortress of Dwarves.

So seeing as how anyone who plays Brikwars must be the creative type (and those who've experienced 2001 rules are used to needless complexity) I thought that a Dwarf Fortress topic was in order. Its a wonderful "little" simulation game where you lead a band of possibly retarded Dorfs, establish a new Dorfen settlement, and strike the earth for riches. And stuff like that.

Anyone play? Got any good stories? I've been at it for a while now, having lost many fortresses to flooding, madness, starvation, and data corruption, but its never been boring. Despite how incredibly boring the game is.

but my friends! they're obsessed with this game. you may have lost fortresses to flooding, but have you lost them to... lava floods?

There is a different set of graphics you can get so its not all ASCII.

Image of the set and somewhere in the thread they mention the guy who made it.

I've played ADOM a while back and I did look at this recently, but I havent got it yet. They have some interesting ideas here with the 3d levels and more dynamic world.

I'm on the same boat as IV. I wish I could play this game. I might give one of the graphic sets a try.

If you can't deal with ascii, go here.
It is one of the bst graphics sets, and the easiest to use.

Side note: DF is awesome.

We actually kept a log from the game last sleepover, in which we switched control every season. It got pretty nuts.

Over on the Something Awful forums, there are legends of the famed dwarven fortress of Boatmurdered. Boatmurdered worked in a similar fashion, where one goon would work on the fortress for a season, then send the file to the next person in line. This worked wonderfully, with a massive fortress being built, being a pinnacle of dwarven engineering.

Then one season somebody flooded it with lava.

I think that's how Boatmurdered should have gone out, and besides, there wasn't a way to save it. Boatmurdered was a hell none of their retarded dwarves wanted to leave.

Any players interested in starting a succession game here?
