It's just sparks. What makes an OTC look like an OTC is it's lego-like appearance.
For OTC's, I think Natalya's suggestion of a beam saber is balanced. No matter how awesome it is, you still have to remember it's gotta work in the game well. I add +1d6 when a hero is using it.

another idea: on a to hit roll of a 1 (fumble) The OTC's awesomeness breaks free of the weapon for an awesome explosion! it counts as a 4D10 explosion centred on the OTC. the character holding the OTC is vaporised, and at the end place the otc back in the middle of the crater, lying on the ground hissing silently, with its strange yet awesome orange glow
