Radiation in this context is two things: energy emitted in the form of waves and the particles given off by a material decaying.

Radiation isn't technically light, light is radiation. The reason people get skin cancer is because of the non-visible light waves like UV rays that are given off by the sun.

though really those places are so well shielded I actually received a lower dose than I would have by walking outside from the background radiation.

radiation is anything that moves away or radiates from a point. shrapnel radiates from the center of an explosion. photons radiate from most matter, and then collide with you're eye wich is interpreted as light. and alpha (hydrogen atombs) Beta (protons, electrons, and neutraons) as well as Gama (photons) are three types of radiation. their lethality and penetrativa ability grows with their designation. alpha being safer than gamma. and gamma being really freaking deadly. all isotopes of uranium emit alpha. people die from uranium radiation.

Then fill bin bags with bedding and pack it around the doors in order to protect you from the effects of nuclear fallout...

I live just within the 15 mile zone of a power plant, so pretty much if there's a meltdown, I'm dead. Woo!

Not exactly. There would be a series of events leading up to the loss of the reactor core and any number of those events would trigger a site-area or general emergency. This in turn would involve state and local officials evaluating the situation and deciding on evacuation or shelter-in-place options.

In the event of a meltdown of a civilian reactor short term shelter-in-place outside of the five mile exclusion (immediate evacuation) zone would be used until they calculate the plume and fallout zone, and once they did that everyone not directly effected by the plume would be permitted to go home.


Now, that is assuming that the situation got that far out of hand. American civilian power plants really cannot melt down on this scale for a variety of reasons, and if they did there are systems in place to mitigate the effects... so it wouldn't be a big dramatic explosion and mess like Chernobyl.

You're making a lot of assumptions here; nuclear safety protocols are different in OneEye's state.

Correct. Remember I live in New York and I received my training here.

The manual for New York State Nuclear Emergency Responder Training clearly states:


"upon the deceleration of a Site Area Emergency or General Emergency at a nuclear operations facility (as defined by blah blah blah) the National Guard will shoot OneEye589 and sexually violate his corpse and all give all of his stuff to random people on the street. This will be performed while Warhead shags Compulsive Catfish's wife as he will be too distracted by the emergency to stop him."

I can't help it that most peoples mothers around here seem to be in my age bracket or maybe slightly older. I'll gladly accept wives of older forum members so long as they are comely.

I don't live anywhere near a nuclear reactor. I'll just have to pretend I do. Ok, I'm pretending now. There, that's much better, I feel so edgy with the added hope of developing some superpowers.
