Desperate Alliances (Round 2)

Post by Bragallot » Sat Feb 20, 2010 7:13 pm

Image

The water of the river seemed like the only calm thing on the battlefield.

Image

That changed when two small gateways appeared, and petite maelstroms appeared in the water, as if things were making it to the surface.

Image

And, as two richly garbed and well-armed warlords stepped out from between the gates, savage men indeed began to rise from the water.

Image

More appeared.

Image

And more. Holy crap! There was a whole horde of them!

Water demons have entered play

Image

Their leader Fishstache addressed the whole troop when it was assembled. The men (?) roared as if they were already celebrating a victory, but his deep voice still boomed over the noise.

Image

Fishstache: "Alright men, you've done this before! Hack and slash for all you're worth! What waters know not our blood? Today, this world will get to know us!"

Image

Like the trained war machine they were they quickly formed up in an arched formation, where the melee troops protected the many ranged warriors they had.

Image

As the water demons started moving across the river - they were seemingly able to walk over water unbothered by it - crossbowmen let their bolts fly, proving their outright hostility.

Image

An imperial swordsman, caught off guard, was saved by the small shield the Purple Mage had casted.

Image

Others took aim at the Kerratians, the faction nearest to them.

Image

Arrows hit home despite the knight's defences, but didn't manage to penetrate their tough armour.

Turn 2 Knights of Kerrat

Image

Sir Garth, determined to complete his mission, pressed his men onward towards the river despite the army that was now in their way. Lord Wrynn went with the crossbowmen that moved around the rock to give them some much needed melee support.

Image

The purple mage then cast a spell.

Image

And a small part of the river froze, the ice thick enough to be called a bridge over which the Kerratians would be able to cross safely... if it weren't for the water demons, of course.

Turn 3 The Dwellers

Image

Miranda wisely gave the order to fall back to the right when she sighted the undead, which would bring the Dwellers closer to their imperial allies and keep them from having to spread their limited numbers across two flanks... at least for the time being.

Image

The Wolfpack rangers and the Giant lagged behind a little because they had to get around the tower. Squads, as we know, kinda suck at this and the Giant was quite plainly too big to fit under it (or I should have built a larger tower).

Image

A second volley was loosed, but the Imperial cannons nor their guns spoke along this time. Miranda crit failed her shot and hit a Furbeast pup in the back of it's head. It squeeked but survived the damage. Oops! Sorry!

Image

Two more of the unlucky phalanx squad that had already lost their captain were cut down by the ranger's fire.

Image

The Wolfpack rangers, however, failed to hit anything. (I'm not using near miss or attack bonuses against squads for this battle 'cos you can see with increased range there's already enough victims of ranged strikes and we of course all wanna see some melee as well)

Giant: "Fools!"

The Bulls

Image

The Bull army, undaunted by the losses, kept creeping forward. The axemen now moved along too.

Image

The crossbowmen let loose another volley. Would they hit anything this time?

Image

They still scored rather poorly, but at least there was some improvement. The Starcape on the tower and a Wolfpack ranger were cut down.

Undead Vanguard

This mortal struggle bores me. I shall retire for now. Will you play with them for a bit?

Necromancess: "None of them will survive, my master."

Image

The undead began to move to sweep across the river, for the battle would probably rage hardest at the fords, so one group of skellies crossed it quickly. Luckily, their fireswords didn't go out on their way.

Image

The rest basically just tried to get in position too, but fell short for this round.

Image

However the crossbowundead were in range of something, and opened fire. They were usually pretty lousy shots but seemed to be aiming well this time around.

Image

Disaster! The Wolfpack rangers were cut down by the volley!

Image

ARISE AGAIN IN THE NAME OF THE MASTER!

It wasn't because of a lack of conviction or anything, but it didn't work.

The Imperials

Image

The swordsmen fortified the Dwellers' position.

Image

And while I was re-posing the rest of the infantry, this happened. I didn't even apply much pressure or anything. I just hope this isn't something that happens frequently 'cos many of my 'leg collection' were bought at about the same time as this... It's unsalvageable! Luckily he can still stand on a baseplate, but Bragallot be sad now.

Image

So anyway, they continued and turned their front towards the Bulls some more.

Image

Something was growing between the purple mage and Sharlena.

Image

Their spell turned out to be a critical succes, and a beam of energy shot towards the sky as the whole army was affected by their spell instead of the few units they had intended it for! (lasts one round) The standard bearer still didn't think too much of magic and returned to Cales' side. Sharlena and the purple mage attempted a thumbs up (crap! no fingers!).

Image

Meanwhile one cannon missed and hit the water, but the other tore apart the two remainders of the unlucky phalanx squad. Bummer.

Image

Flag guard: "Strange things are happening sir. I don't like it one bit. We should keep our eye out for hidden dangers."
Cales: "Yeah, lemme see, I can't seem to spot anything unusu- ack! Fly in my eye!" (no heroic feat next turn)

Image

The remaining Starcape, with the phalanx general well out of range, took aim at the closest thing that seemed general-like to him.

Image

He scored a hit, but the chieftain remained mightily unimpressed under the power of the blunderbuss - or whatever those contraptions were called anyway.

Hey Oloth, any word on the next Dark Wind turn? No rush, just curious.

Well, I'm guessing amongst a people where getting strong and learning to swing an axe is the most important thing at life only the ones helpless enough not to manage even that are given a bow or... something :)

Tbh, I don't understand it myself. :? The skeletons have -1 to skill and shot everything they could. With the spell the Imperials cast things aren't likely to improve next round, though we can always hope.

... Crap. Completely forgot about that. Which takes some serious skill, considering the entire battlefield is still sitting in front of my window.

Well, part of the reason it fell off is that I'm actually planning a BrikSpace forum battle. I'm writing up stat cards and everything.

So do you think I should do that, or finish Dark Wind? It sadly can't be both, I don't have the space to support that.

Well I'd suggest finishing Dark Wind, but that IS a bit biased. BUT it probably won't take long to finish up, judging by the size of the teams. Also I learned the hard way that moving on to a new project halfway through is harder to handle than getting done with one and then moving on.

But really, it's up to you. I don't mind, I've got 2 other forum battles plus my daily MOC project to keep me busy. Flip a coin

Done. I called heads for BrikSpace and tails for Dark Wind.

Got heads.

Work continues.

Anywho, having fun with the forums battles that are more likely to finish? >_>

I doubt it. Aoffan and almost everyone else just died in mine, so I'm going to have some angry rivals...

Ouch. I hate it when that happens.

(I'll stop spamming your thread soon, Bragallot, I promise)

Any ideas or cool suggestions for a BrikSpace scenario? I have a few ideas rolling around, but it's still pretty open.
