O.L.D. Expeditionary Force ground units

Post by Wingnut » Sun Mar 20, 2011 5:37 pm

The OLD tends to field a heavily mechanized army due mainly to a shortage of manpower and the difficulty of transporting additional reinforcements the the Expeditionary Force through the Mailstorm. This also makes for a compact and readily transportable army that is very much in keeping with the Expeditionary Force's primary objective of seeking out new allies and enemies.

Image

The Urchin APC is the primary troop transport of the OLD. It is equipped with fairly heavy armor, a pair of medium grade lasers, and a pair of miniguns.

The Urchin has a carrying capacity of four soldiers plus the pilot.

The Barracuda Infantry Support Tank is a good general purpose vehicle equipped with relatively short-ranged weaponry.

Image

The main armament consists of a linked pair of 50mm cannon with a hull-mounted minigun for anti-infantry and four homing missiles for close-range anti-tank and anti-structure.

Image

Image

The Barracuda has a two-man crew, one driver and one gunner, who work in concert to deliver the tank's devastating firepower.

Image

The Hydra is the OLD's Main Battle Tank and the second most common Armored Fighting Vehicle fielded by the Expeditionary Force after the Urchin APC.

Image

Image

Armed with two miniguns in sponson mounts, a hull-mounted light autocannon, a heavy plasma cannon and a coaxial 45mm cannon. Combined with its thick armor and moderate speed, the Hydra is a force to be reckoned with.

Image

Hydra crews are fiercely competitive and will often keep a running "kill tally" throughout a campaign.

Since regular infantry can rarely keep up with armor in the heat of battle (and not in small part due to the above-mentioned manpower shortage), the OLD deploys Tripedal Extended Combat and Campaign Robotic Units, or Tribots for short.

Image

Image

These fully autonomous robots may have the personality of day-old porridge, but they are very skilled in combat. Note that they wield even titanium halberds, pulse disruptors (the gray-tipped ones), and laser repeaters (red-tipped ones) with the greatest of ease.

Image

Image

To liven up their general lack of personality, Captain Tyro has taken it upon himself to teach the Tribots to dance, with his limited success demonstrated above.

Image

Image

The Heron Mod F is a fire-support robot that often accompanies the Tribots into battle. It is armed with an extended-range beam disruptor and a 20mm gatling cannon making it very flexible in combat.

The Heron Mod C is designed for close combat and sports slightly heavier armor than the Mod F. It is armed with a pair of awesomite claws and a pair of shoulder-mounted assault blasters. Excellent reaction time and an expanded processing unit allow the Mod C to outperform most organic creatures of similar size in combat.

Thanks for reading and special thanks to Natalya, to whose Super Death Tank my Hydras may or may not bear a more than passing resemblance.

The vehicles could use some work. They seem too tall, and the APCs look like tracked eggs. But they are heavily armed. It's a good start. Keep at it!

Now, as for those robots:

I will admit that the tanks and the APCs are kinda tall and :boxy:, the Barracuda being the worst offender, but I was having difficulty making enough space for the crew otherwise. I actually like the APCs' general look, however. They remind me of an AT-PT on tracks (kudos if you don't need to google that).

good job. I love the apc's, despite their height, and of course, the robots are awesome.
i like how you gave the tanks different color schemes, while maintaining the overall coherence... but they do look a little bit tall for tanks.
great army overall

Wow. Each unit I saw here managed to top the last; the long range Heron units were probably the coolest. Awesome work, the OLD is definitely a first rate army now.

I love those tribots you have going there, and the Urchin APC's are pure awesome - have you thought about a way to make the entire back end open up at all?

Despite their boxyness, I like the vehicles, especially the urchin and the tanks. Now I need to get more tanks of my own lol....
